THIS IS A REMARKABLE WOMAN

Karen Armstrong

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Karen Armstrong (born 14 November 1944 in Wildmoor, Worcestershire) is a British author of numerous works on comparative religion, who first rose to prominence with her highly successful A History of God. A former Catholic nun, she asserts that "All the great traditions are saying the same thing in much the same way, despite their surface differences." They each have in common, she says, an emphasis upon the overriding importance of compassion, as expressed by way of the Golden Rule: Do not do to others what you would not have done to you.

Author of several books on the Muslim tradition, she has, since the September 11, 2001 attacks, become much in demand on the US lecture circuit. In February 2008 Armstrong called for a council of Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders to draw up a “Charter of Compassion,” which would apply shared moral priorities to foster greater global understanding. Her interfaith initiative was awarded the $100,000 TED Prize, backed by an international conference of leading figures in the fields of design, entertainment and technology.[1][2]

[edit] Early life

Armstrong was born into a family of Irish extraction who, after her birth, moved to Bromsgrove and later to Birmingham. In her teens, from 1962 to 1969, she became a nun in the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, a teaching order. Once she'd advanced from postulant and novice to professed nun, she was sent to St Anne's College, Oxford, to study English. Armstrong left the order while still an undergraduate. After graduating, she embarked on a DPhil on the poetTennyson. While continuing to work on it, she taught at London University, but the rejection of her thesis by an external examiner proved highly traumatic. She eventually left academia without completing her doctorate.[3] This period was marked by ill-health—the life-long but at the time undiagnosed epilepsy revealed in her autobiography The Spiral Staircase—as well as the difficult readjustment to outside life.

[edit] Career

In 1976, Armstrong became an English teacher at a girls' school in Dulwich, but her illness caused so many days off work, that she was finally asked to leave in 1982. During this year she had published Through the Narrow Gate, a well-received account of her convent agonies. Largely on the strength of this, in 1984, Armstrong was commissioned by the UK's Channel Four to write and present a TV documentary on the life of St. Paul. Now came what Armstrong regards as her breakthrough experience. The actuality of being in Jerusalem, and the way it seemed to defy her prior assumptions—she'd become hostile to religion as such[clarification needed]; indeed it was partly the reason she'd been hired in the first place—had the effect of transfiguring her attitude to the world's religious traditions[clarification needed]. Armstrong describes in The Spiral Staircase how all her work since has, in a sense, flowed[clarification needed] from that comparatively brief period in Jerusalem. In 1996, she published Jerusalem: One City, Three Faiths.

The increasing interest in and debate surrounding the influence of Islam has made Armstrong a popular speaker, causing some observers to credit her with being influential in conveying a "more objective" view of Islam to a wide public in Europe and North America.[4]

The Great Transformation: The Beginning of Our Religious Traditions, was published in March 2006, and a measure of her success came that same year when she achieved the very English accolade of being invited to choose her eight favourite records for BBC Radio's Desert Island Discs programme.[5]

In 2007, Armstrong was invited by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore to deliver the "2007 MUIS Lecture".[6]

Armstrong is a fellow of the Jesus Seminar. She has written numerous articles for The Guardian and other publications. She was a key advisor on Bill Moyers' popular PBS series on religion, has addressed members of the US Congress, and was one of three scholars to speak at the UN's first ever session on religion.[7] She is a vice-president of the British Epilepsy Association, otherwise known as Epilepsy Action.

[edit] Religious position

Armstrong, who taught for a time at London's Leo Baeck rabbinic college, says she has been particularly inspired by the Jewish tradition's emphasis in matters of faith versus practice: "I say that religion isn’t about believing things. It's about what you do. It’s ethical alchemy. It’s about behaving in a way that changes you, that gives you intimations of holiness and sacredness.” She points out that religious fundamentalism is not just a response to but, paradoxically, a product of contemporary culture. "We need to create a new narrative, get out of the rat-run of hatred, chauvinism and defensiveness; and make the authentic voice of religion a power in the world that is conducive to peace."

A major influence on Armstrong's whole approach to the world's religious traditions has been, as she implies in The Spiral Staircase, the work of the Canadian scholar Wilfred Cantwell Smith.

[edit] Criticism

The Israeli historian Efraim Karsh, head of Mediterranean Studies at King's College London, characterizes Armstrong's biography of Muhammad as "revisionist" and inaccurate.[8] He calls her treatment of the controversial issue of the Banu Qurayza tribe in her Muhammad: A Prophet for Our Time "a travesty of the truth".

Hugh Fitzgerald, an active critic of Islam, says in the New English Review Article "The Coherence of Her Incoherence,"[9]:

For Karen Armstrong history does not exist. It is putty in the hands of the person who writes about history. You use it to make a point, to do good as you see it. And whatever you need to twist or omit is justified by the purity of your intentions – and Karen Armstrong always has the purest of intentions.
Karen Armstrong is not innocent, and manages to do a great deal of harm, careless or premeditated harm, to history. Too many people read that she has written a few books, and assume, on the basis of nothing, that “she must know what she is talking about” – and some of the nonsense sticks. And perhaps an enraged professor or two bothers to dismiss her, but mostly – this is how the vast public, in debased democracies, learns its history today

A great deal of criticism concerning Armstrong stems from her lack of professional training as a historian, degree or otherwise[citation needed]. Her treatment of the crusades is seen by many historians as ill-informed [10], while others find her writing "incoherent," [11]. However, Armstrong's career as a writer has not suffered from such scholarly criticism.

[edit] Honours

Armstrong was honoured by the New York Open Center in 2004 for her "profound understanding of religious traditions and their relation to the divine."[citation needed] In 2008 Armstrong was one of three winners of the TED Conference's TED Prize.[12] Her TED Prize "wish": to initiate an international Charter for Compassion—to help restore the Golden Rule as central to religious practice and daily life throughout the world.[1][2]

In May 2008 she was awarded the Freedom of Worship award by the Roosevelt Institute, one of four medals presented each year to men and women whose achievements have demonstrated a commitment to the Four Freedoms proclaimed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941 as essential to democracy: freedom of speech and of worship, freedom from want and from fear. The institute stated that Armstrong had become "a significant voice, seeking mutual understanding in times of turbulence, confrontation and violence among religious groups." It cited "her personal dedication to the ideal that peace can be found in religious understanding, for her teachings on compassion, and her appreciation for the positive sources of spirituality." [13]

TEXT ONLY

PLEASE VIEW ON UTUBE SITE IF THIS DOESN'T PLAY CORRECTLY....SHOWN AT RIGHT....MINDJAZZ1

I compiled a book a few years ago which was a combination of pictures of the Universe from the Hubble Telescope....My Artwork and words that I called NEO-ILLUMINATIONS.

The book is called Neo-Illuminations, Galaxies and me

I sent out 7 copies to book publishers over a year and a half, from 2003 to 2004 and received 7 extremely nice rejection notices. An extremely nice rejection note is one that has a hand written message along with the form rejection letter.

7 is not enough rejections....but they took the wind out of my sails and after carefully looking at self-publishing and rejecting for various reasons....I simply put the project on hold.

I have decided to start sending the book out again.

It is intended to be a coffee table sized publication.

I had posted a version of it, without my artwork, about a year ago on U TUBE. I just noticed the other day that there was a comment left, at the time of posting, from a very dear friend... ...and I've decided to post the comment. I had not noticed the comment until three days ago.

"Who, what, when, where and why?
Of all the people I know....I would think you might know those answers.....as far as anybody else wondering.....well that's the beauty of Neo-Illumination....obviously it's not intended for the masses....or the masses would have it.....and from what I can tell....not only do the masses not have it.....but IT is not even being looked into."

This comment helped to reinvigorate the effort that would allow a small portion of the masses to HAVE IT.

There is always the chance that no sizable portion of the masses will ever HAVE IT or GET IT or
WANT IT....but I'm hoping that those who might NEED IT will eventually stumble across it.

I realize that the words by themselves are the NEO-ILLUMINATIONS so I've decided to post them in my handwriting, which was a friends suggestion five years ago that I ignored.

THE GALAXY pictures were selected because my brother didn't like my artwork and my father didn't think I should mess up my artwork with all the silly writing....so instead of just my personal artwork I figured adding pictures of the Universe made sense.

At the time of complying the book....I had read that only 5% of the world's population had seen pictures from the Hubble Telescope

BYTHEWAY.......The amount of writing within artwork today is beyond common place and indeed quite prevalent.

When I started my first NEO-ILLUMINATION piece of ART (11th commandment)in 1995
there was very little artwork being done that incorporated phrases with abstract artwork.

That's the beauty of being open to Universal INPUT....thousands of artists got the word from that MOIS..... magical orbital information supplier....WHOEVER THAT MIGHT BE...and we started doing our versions of the information.

The price I paid to receive NEO-ILLUMINATIONS is way beyond any price that I wanted to pay and given a choice in the matter would gladly return for a full refund and no FEBRUARY 3rd 1994 moment.

I'm considered an Outsider Artist because I have not received my BA from a University and my AA degree just doesn't pass the mustard.

Hopefully the NEO-ILLUMINATIONS that were sent to my soul and then slipped to my brain and then escaped through my fingers...have no regard for levels of completed education.

Thus the above video with Jeff Buckley's version of Leonard Cohen's song "Hallelujah" shows the words by themselves.

The words obviously stand by themselves...but they do appear naked without the artwork...but then again that's just one outsider's opinion.

I realize the words will be rather small on your screen but then again maybe they are suppose to be hard to get!

JOHN McCAIN is a genius

No matter how hard one tries to blame Barack Obama for the STOCK MARKET MELTDOWN... and believe me even I realize that BIG BUSINESS and their damaged ego can cause havoc if not coddled and pampered all the way to the bank....IT IS QUITE OBVIOUS THAT THE RAMIFICATIONS OF THE MORTGAGE COLLAPSE AND MANUFACTURING JOB LOSSES STARTED WELL BEFORE JANUARY 20 2009.

I HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT JOHN MC CAIN SAW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN AND THAT'S WHY HE PICKED SARAH PALIN TO BE HIS RUNNING MATE.

ARGUABLY THE LEAST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE FOR VICE PRESIDENT, IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN POLITICS, MRS. PALIN WAS PROBABLY THE ONLY GUARANTEE THAT HE WOULD LOSE THE ELECTION.

(UNLESS OF COURSE YOU REALLY BELIEVE THE PUNDITS THAT SAY THE DEFEAT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE LAST EIGHT YEARS)

DOES ANYBODY HONESTLY THINK, AT HIS AGE, THAT HE WANTED TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE ECONOMIC MELTDOWN?

And being a lifer in the Senate means that he probably had a better handle on the future because he helped create the problem.

My brother, who is a conservative republican, claims that all the politicians, in both parties, over the last forty years are fully responsible for the mortgage meltdown and thus for the banking problems.

It's easy to blame them all and he actually might be right... but to turn around and then say that Barack is the straw that broke the camel's back....is rather silly.

I don't know if Barry can do anything to reverse the present downturn of the Stock Market but I do know that he is changing somethings that might matter much much much more.

YESTERDAY....HE REVERSED GEORGE BUSH'S STEM CELL POLICY

YES!!!!!!

Science moves into the White House for the first time in quite awhile. It's unfortunate that they still refer to it as
CONTROVERSIAL SCIENCE
but
oh well.......the amount of money that will now flow into Stem Cell research will soon make the word...CONTROVERSIAL disappear.

ALL IT WILL TAKE ARE A FEW SIMPLE BREAKTHROUGHS AND THEN PEOPLE WILL BE SAYING.....

WHAT THE HELL TOOK SO LONG?

Well...we had a dimwit in the White House who didn't believe in evolution so of course limits were placed on research because of misguided moral convictions so thus the entire spectrum of progressive scientific research was put on hold.

ALL THE ECONOMIC PROBLEMS WILL SEEM TRIVIAL TO THE SCIENTIFIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS....EVENTUALLY

In the meantime....we appear to be
screwed

But it sure ain't Barack Obama's fault................................................yet

And you've got to give kudos's to John McCain....he knew when to fold the tent and get the hell out of Dodge.

FACES and Jennifer Nettles and Reese

THE BACKGROUND VOCAL ON THIS PRODUCTION IS SUPPLIED BY

JENNIFER NETTLES

AND HER BAND SUGARLAND

I believe that SHE has the best voice I've heard in years and is one of leaders in
CROSSOVER COUNTRY

CROSSOVER COUNTRY is not a real name (I don't think) but hell we've got to start somewhere in attempting to explain what some of the country singers are doing....Jennifer Nettles and Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood etc etc etc.

I think Garth might have started the trend....and Rascal Flats and Brooks and Dunn hint at it...but JENNIFER NETTLES
HAS
TAKEN
IT
TO
THE
MAX

SHE IS WONDERFUL AND I HIGHLY SUGGEST BUYING HER LATEST CD
....LOVE ON THE INSIDE

TRACK NUMBER 12 MIGHT BE THE GREATEST COUNTRY WESTERN SONG EVER WRITTEN

TRACK NUMBER TEN IS THE BEST LOVE SONG SINCE STEVIE NICK'S LEATHER AND LACE AND BONNIE RAITT'S I CAN'T MAKE YOU LOVE ME AND PATTI SMYTH'S SOMETIMES LOVE JUST AIN'T ENOUGH...(the Patty Smyth that John McEnroe married....which was ok...but then he took her out of the loop and she never made another album...selfish sob.)

AND TRACK NUMBER TEN IS WHAT YOU JUST LISTENED TO WITH MY ARTWORK...

WHAT I'D GIVE is the name of the song and I'll repeat her name one more time just for perfect clarification

STILL NO WORD FROM THE WHITE HOUSE

This is the fifth article I've written about CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder) in the last year and a half. I haven't written about it since the Presidential election because I simply assumed that our NEW CHANGES in government would be responding to this issue.

I'm starting to get worried because this issue might compare to trying to clean up Toxic Waste sites around the country.

You don't hear too much about Toxic Waste Sites clean up programs because frankly they (both sides of the aisle) have no idea what to really do about it....so basically being quiet is just the best way of dealing with the problem.

I HEAR NOTHING ABOUT CCD except an occasional letter to the editor from time to time....as in today's Santa Monica Daily Press.
COLONY COLLAPSE DISORDER might be one of those hands off issues. Neither side has any idea why BEES are disappearing so the best way of dealing with the problem is by being quiet. Why make everybody upset over something that can't be explained.

THE ONLY REALITY HERE IS THAT BEES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR POLLINATION.

They aren't the only creature that pollinates but they are the responsible for a very large percentage of what does get pollinated.

There have been rumors that Einstein warned about the lost of Bees but no real evidence can produce where and when he said that....

....AND THAT'S ONE OF THE PROBLEMS.

PEOPLE MAKE UP CRAP ABOUT WHO SAID WHAT ABOUT SOMETHING AND THEN IT TURNS OUT NOT TO BE TRUE AND THE ISSUE GETS LOST IN THE BULLSHIT.

FACTS OF THE MATTER (wikipedia)

Bees play an important role in pollinating flowering plants, and are the major type of pollinator in ecosystems that contain flowering plants. Bees either focus on gathering nectar or on gathering pollen depending on demand, especially in social species. Bees gathering nectar may accomplish pollination, but bees that are deliberately gathering pollen are more efficient pollinators. It is estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination, most of which is accomplished by bees, especially the domesticated European honey bee. Contract pollination has overtaken the role of honey production for beekeepers in many countries. Monoculture and the massive decline of many bee species (both wild and domesticated) have increasingly caused honey bee keepers to become migratory so that bees can be concentrated in seasonally-varying high-demand areas of pollination.

Bees are the favorite meal of Merops apiaster, the bee-eater bird. Other common predators are kingbirds, mockingbirds, bee wolves, and dragonflies.

I SURE HOPE THE PROBLEM ISN'T BEING CREATED BY MOCKINGBIRDS WITH EATING DISORDERS.

Scale of the disorder
(wikipedia)

In the U.S., at least 24 different states[8][17] as well as portions of Canada[18] have reported at least one case of CCD. However, in many cases, beekeepers reporting significant losses of bees did not experience CCD, and a major part of the subsequent analysis of the phenomenon hinges upon distinguishing between true CCD losses and non-CCD losses.[19] In a survey of 384 responding beekeepers from 13 states, reporting the number of hives containing few or no bees in spring, 23.8% met the specified criteria for CCD (that 50% or more of their dead colonies were found without bees and/or with very few dead bees in the hive or apiary).[19] In the US, CCD-suffering operations had a total loss of 45% compared to the total loss of 25% of all colonies experienced by non-CCD suffering beekeepers in 2006-2007; it is further noted that non-CCD winter losses as high as 50% have occurred in some years and regions (e.g., 2000-2001 in Pennsylvania), though "normal" winter losses are typically considered to be in the range of 15-25%.[19]

In the winter of 2008 a survey by the US Department of Agriculture/Agricultural Research Services (USDA-ARS) and Apiary inspectors showed that 36% of America's 2.4 million hives were lost to CCD. The survey covered almost 20% of America's 1,500 commercial beekeepers, and suggested an increase of 11% over the losses of 2007, and 40% over the losses of 2006. [20]

There are also putative cases reported by the media from India, Brazil[21] and parts of Europe.[22] Since the beginning of the 1990s, France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Slovenia and the Netherlands have been affected by honey bee disappearances, though this is not necessarily associated with CCD

SO WE DON'T CALL IT CCD...WE JUST CALL IT DB.... DISAPPEARING BEES

WHATEVER WE CALL IT....THE END RESULT IS WAY WORSE THAN ANY PROBLEM WE MIGHT BE HAVING WITH OIL AND GAS ISSUES

;[2] Austria and United Kingdom (where it has been dubbed the "Mary Celeste" phenomenon, after a ship whose crew disappeared in 1872[23]) have also reportedly been affected.[4] It is far from certain that all or any of these reported non-US cases are indeed CCD: there has been considerable publicity, but only rarely was the phenomenon described in sufficient detail. In Germany, for example, where some of the first reports of CCD in Europe appeared, and where — according to the German national association of beekeepers — 40% of the honey bee colonies died,[4] there has been no scientific confirmation; as of early May 2007, the German media were reporting that no confirmed CCD cases seemed to have occurred in Germany.[24]

THE PROBLEM HERE IS THAT EVERYBODY IS FOCUSED ON THE ECONOMY AND THE WAR IN IRAQ AND THAT THE LOST OF BEES IS WAY DOWN THE LIST....OR NOT ON THE LIST AT ALL.

WHEN CERTAIN BASIC FOODS START COSTING TWENTY TIMES MORE AND THEN SUDDENLY CERTAIN FOODS AREN'T EVEN AVAILABLE THEN PERHAPS THE ISSUE WILL BE ADDRESSED BY THE WHITE HOUSE AND BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE.....but the problem is.....by then it might

Bee

THEY CALL IT THE INTERNATIONAL DEFENSE EXHIBITION AND CONFERENCE
OR IMEX WITH THE WORD DEFENSE BEING THE CATCH ALL WORD

THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE WORLD HAVE TRULY LOST THEIR MINDS

I THOUGHT AT THE VERY LEAST ONE HAD TO USE CORRUPTION, DECEIT, SABOTAGE AND BRIBERY TO OBTAIN WEAPONS OF THIS SIZE AND SCALE....BUT LO AND BEHOLD I FIND OUT THAT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS REGISTER AND GET A DAY PASS.

I'VE BEEN TO TRADE SHOWS AND WHEN PEOPLE WALK UP WITH A BUSINESS CARD THEY GET A PASS.

Imagine the business cards that were floating around that show.

I wonder what kind of professional women they had brought in? Probably just borrowed some from the Sheik's or Prince's harems....which were obtained earlier from the HOT KIDNAPPED WOMEN'S TRADE SHOW IN DECEMBER....also held at the same convention center.

TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN BY WEAPONS OF THIS SIZE AND SCALE JUST SCROLL DOWN THE LIST BELOW.

IMAGINE THE INVENTORY THAT DIDN'T MAKE THIS LIST....WHICH WAS ONLY AVAILABLE BEHIND CLOSED CURTAINS IN THE BACK OF A BOOTH.

THE BOOTHS AT THIS TRADE SHOW HAD TO BE KILLERS.....AND BELIEVE ME...THERE IS NO FREAKING PUN INTENDED WITH THAT COMMENT.

IT'S A FLAT OUT FACT

KILLER TOYS FOR SALE AT A TRADE SHOW......and they claim they did $4.6 Billion dollars in deals.

Facts and figures on the show.....maybe you will want to get a booth next year and sell your Tesla Death Ray?

I think Ironman had a booth......oh I mean Tony Stark.

************
from the broken things,
I need to make something

broken glass,
words –
unspoken
doomed?

still,
from so long ago,
still I see these burning mountains,
burning mountains dreaming,

I can still smell a burning cigarette,
I still walk in smoldering circles
in an empty, stolen house
full of everything that everyone –
everything that everyone stole from me

and did you know that
you can break tiny, innocent things?
you could break them

you can draw out
slowly, ever slowly,
letter by sad letter,
a goodbye in wet concrete,

and you can come back
and you can approach solemnly,
piously,
its enduring ruins,
and you can claim
new allegiances and make
new promises that smell still bitter,

and you can break them,
those tiny, innocent things –
such tiny, such innocent things that
stand now proudly,
now defiantly,
over these broken goodbye ruins,
and ask for nothing more
than to be able to protect this proving
burn, this scar, and this mark
because it says, undoubtedly,
it speaks without telling:
he is gone, he is gone

yes, things,
no matter how tiny, how innocent
can be broken into little pieces that
feel no longer a thing,
not a thing, but perhaps,
the quivering of an old sting

I SMELL THE GRASS

The smell of fresh cut grass is running through my nose and settling deep in my heart and since I'm taking a beta-blocker it's really nice to know that the beginning of major league baseball is still part of my annual routine.

Personal annual routines have a way of disappearing when your heart stops working...or in my case when your heart works too fast.

I'm happy to report at this moment in time, on February 26 2009, my heart seems to be beating at a normal rate of around 60 beats a minute. Considering that four months ago it was averaging about 140 beats a minute, this present situation is quite positive. It doesn't mean I won't have a stroke but it does mean that the problem with my heart can start to fix itself......because I was told by the doctors that if I had a regular heartbeat (60-65) the problem was repairable.

Spring Training has a way of healing most winter blues.

BASEBALL HAS A WAY OF HEALING EVERYTHING

Well...maybe not everything. I can't imagine how it can help the economy on a large scale but it does allow a very large part of the population to focus on something they love other than the pressing problems of a nation trying to recover from whatever that was taking place between 2000 and 2008.

I personally think, even though I will never be able to prove it, that Dick Cheney set the tone for America during the last eight years. Everybody knows about his influence on the White House but very few people understand how his attitude could depress the entire country.

I'M SORRY BUT IT'S NIXONesque IN SCOPE. It's probably hard to imagine that one person's personality could affect the entire nation but DICK CHENEY is an asshole and I believe the important decisions that came from the Oval Office over the last eight years came from the heart and the mind of the REAL DICK.

THAT FACT THAT BOTH NIXON AND CHENEY ARE DICKS IS JUST TOO FREAKING STRANGE.

IF WE EVER ELECT ANOTHER DICK TO ANYTHING OF IMPORTANCE WE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF OURSELVES.

Boy....to think a few minutes ago I was excited about Spring Training and now I am totally pissed off about Dick Cheney really proves how sinister he was.

But maybe once the season gets under way I will be able to finally put the Real Dick behind me and move forward but I have a feeling it might not be that easy.

If the Dodgers sign Manny that might help.
If the Dodgers sign a quality starter that might help.
If the Dodgers hired Nomar as a player coach that might help.
If the Dodgers brought back Ross Porter that might help.
If the Dodgers signed Ron Fairly to replace Charlie Steiner that might help.
If the Attorney General of the United States indited Dick Cheney for war crimes that might help.

IT JUST WON'T GO AWAY.....I PROMISE TO STOP TALKING ABOUT THE REAL DICK FOR AWHILE JUST TO HELP THE HEALING PROCESS.

Hopefully the out of sight out of mind dealio will start working soon.

Hopefully Baseball will really help me and help America get back to having a good season.

AMERICA NEEDS A GOOD SEASON and having a good manager should really help.

PLAY BALL!

THE CHANGE IN SPEECH MAKING IS REMARKABLE

For eight years we listed to speeches by a man that generally did not enjoy making speeches. He might have dug being President but George was never comfortable telling us what his opinion was regarding national and global situations.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO MEN IS STUNNING.

I'm not about to say that Barack can figure out the present economic mess but listening to him explain it...at least gives me hope that he might be able to figure it out.

I will be withholding judgment on his performance but in the meantime Barack Obama should give a speech everyday until we are tired of hearing him speak.

JUST KEEP TALKING BARRY SO THAT WE CAN ERASE ALL MEMORIES OF THE CRAP WE'VE HAD TO LISTEN TO OVER THE LAST EIGHT YEARS.

THE DIFFERENCE IS STUNNING
THANK GOD
FOR
THE
DIFFERENCE

And the attitude of the American public, when the person in charge can speak with elegance and insight, WILL improve.

AND ATTITUDE AND PERCEPTION ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT and can lead to increased productivity.

I realize that's an extreme shortcut to recovery but when there is a good coach the team always plays better.

Only time will tell how good the new coach is.......but in the meantime he gives great halftime speeches and I am excited and quite relieved that the previous coach is looking for a job in a hardware store.

AN ECONOMIC BANKING HERO

Following information gathered from article by Borzou Daragahi in LA TIMES story on 2/21/09
**********

Trying to find responsible people within the global banking community?

Look no further than your quaint little country of LEBANON.

Riad Toufic Salame is the governor of Lebanon's central bank and basically holds the same job as our Federal Reserve Chairman.
The bottom line....LEBANON BANKS HAVE HAD ONE OF THEIR BEST YEARS EVER....and their savings accounts yield a solid 6%

And it's not like he didn't know the ropes and just got lucky. He worked for Merrill Lynch for 20 years before becoming the central bank governor 15 years ago.

An odd side-bar issue about this story is that for years Lebanon was considered to be one of the major money laundering countries of the middle east.

One of the primary things Mr. Salame did was to issue a rule that prevented Lebanese banks from lending more than 70% of their deposits.

LEVERAGING is the problem and attempting to "create credit ratings" from LEVERAGING is a huge problem in the long run.

And it appears that the long run has arrived.....

....but it has not arrived in Lebanon thanks to the caution and awareness of Riad Toufic Salame.

Perhaps the World Bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citi Bank should hire Mr. Salame as a consultant....but I doubt that Lebanon would allow that type of "harmonious intervention" with the global banking community.

He does drive to work in an armored plated BMW so there's that reality check regarding.....life in Lebanon.

ARMORED PLATED BMW.....wow....that really is a reality check.

If I was GM, Ford or Chrysler....I would immediately offer him an improved version with their special armored plated Cadillacs, Lincolns and Mini-Vans.

WOW that was quick

When one can make a complaint and that complaint gets immediate response than the Universe is working in one's favor. Of course the Universe granting favors can be a very temporary matter so no one should get too excited when it happens.

Yesterday I wrote and bitched that the new California budget included a .12 per galleon gas hike tax....and then this morning I wake up and read the details of the Budget and lo and behold the gas tax was not included.

The explanation was that BAIL-OUT money would be used instead for the area originally intended to be satisfied by the gas tax.

But apparently (to my complete surprise) VOTERS will have some say in the Budget and a special election has been created on May 19th.

I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW THAT PUPPY READS

Think about all the past propositions and how the wording completely attempted to confuse. I can't imagine how a ballot will read with the entire weight of a California State Budget resting in our hands.

I ACTUALLY THOUGHT THE BUDGET WAS SOMETHING TO BE CREATED BY THE PEOPLE WE ELECTED TO RUN THE STATE.

Little did I know.

MY PREDICTION FOR MAY 19TH

THE SPECIAL BALLOT ON MAY 19TH WILL HAVE THE LOWEST VOTER TURNOUT IN THE HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA.

I HOPE I'M WRONG

BUDGET GETS PASSED AND WE GET GASSED

I can't believe that part of the new California budget includes a 12 cent a gallon gas tax increase.

AND AN INCREASE ON AUTOMOTIVE REGISTRATION?

IS THIS THEIR WAY OF GETTING US OFF THE STREETS?

Couldn't they have added 50 cents more on beer......or another dollar on smokes.

AND JUST IMAGINE IF CALIFORNIA DECIDED TO GROW POT AND SELL IT...THE REVENUE WOULD BE HUGE

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WOULD HAVE A STROKE BUT THEN AGAIN THEY WANT US ( the states) TO BE CREATIVE..... SO PASS THAT BONG ALONG AND LET'S REALLY GET CREATIVE!

I THINK THAT THE PEOPLE WE'VE ELECTED ARE IN A MAJOR RUT and last week I shook hands with our gov....and told him to work harder on the Budget and he told me to ......

"just
relax...and take it easy."

HUH??????

Maybe he thought I was dangerous or maybe he just thought I needed to relax....
had I known about the 12 cent gas tax hike I would have really made him nervous.

CREATIVITY IS DEFINITELY NOT A PART OF THE POLITICAL SYSTEM.....THANK GOD JERRY BROWN HAS THROWN HIS HAT BACK IN THE RING....

WE NEED HIM......

WHO IS THE DICKHEAD IN THIS VIDEO

First let me state quite clearly that I am a huge David Letterman fan. I don't watch any of the other late night shows unless of course Reese is going to be on.....

I watched the Joaquin Phoenix interview last night and there's no doubt in my mind that David was being a complete asshole.

Yes Joaquin has some issues but anybody who follows show business knows that fact. The other possible answer is that Mr. Phoenix is Bi-Polar and God only knows what's going to happen when he puts himself in those situations.

I can figure out fairly easily that he was contractually obligated by the studio to promote his latest film.

If I was Joaquin I would simply not agree to promote any future film and from all indications it looks like there might not be any future films....so problem solved.

David needs to take some nice medication and chill back when doing interviews with people who just aren't comfortable with the format.

Mr. Letterman was being a dickhead but I'll be taping his show again tonight and that's the end of that tune.

Out

Currentlly out of town trying to sell some art...which in the present state of economy...is a lot like having a monkey fly out of my ass.
I watched Saturday Night Live last night and the opening remarks were focused on Barack's first press conference.
I missed it and I wished I had seen it but the big thing I missed was the Jouquin Phoenix experience on David Letterman.
I'm going to download it and watch it but apparently Mr. Phoenix is having some problems.

But I would like to meet somebody who isn't having some problems

THE BIGGER PROBLEM

Since the first caveman talked his neighbor into giving him a turkey leg for a moonbeam...there have been scam artists. Some have risen to incredible levels of accomplishment but we won't get into the Bush years right now...even though the most recent noteworthy con was done under George's watch.

The individual con artist or scam artist has always existed and the truth is they will always exist.

It's up to each one of us to follow the ole adage....if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

BERNIE MADOFF turns out to be a prolific con artist but we have a much BIGGER PROBLEM than an individual trying to scam other individuals out of their life savings.

It turns out that the SEC....Security and Exchange Commission...had been responsibly warned as far back as 2000 about Madoff and over the next 8 years never acted regarding the continual ripoff.

THIS IS THE MAJOR PART OF THE STORY AND YET IT'S ALL ABOUT BERNIE MADOFF.

THE SEC IS RESPONSIBLE FOR APPROXIMATELY $43 BILLION OF THE $50 BILLION THAT MADOFF SUCKED FROM HIS CLIENTS.

ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT THE SECURITY AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION HAD NOBODY WHO COULD UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY WERE BEING TOLD BY FRAUD INVESTIGATOR HARRY MARKOPOLAS?

I have to believe that when someone gets hired by the SEC they most likely have a college degree and I would then assume that within those hired employees there had to be numerous accountants, lawyers and business majors.

DID THE SEC HIRE ONLY PEOPLE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE CLASS?

IT APPEARS SO...AND IT APPEARS THAT PERHAPS I'M UNDERESTIMATING THE ABILITY TO CONTROL REGULATION IMPLEMENTATION BY THE SIMPLE ACT OF....BRIBERY.

IF BRIBERY IS INVOLVED IN THIS CASE AND IT IS DISCOVERED THAT PEOPLE WORKING FOR THE SEC WERE TURNING THEIR BACKS BECAUSE THEY WERE INCREASING THE SIZE OF THEIR BANK ACCOUNTS, THEN WE REALLY REALLY REALLY HAVE A BIGGER PROBLEM.

EVERYONE SHOULD READ ALL THE DETAILS REGARDING THE MADOFF SCAM...AND PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE LACK OF RESPONSE BY THE SEC.

The fact that Bernie took Sandy Koufax to the cleaners shouldn't really matter because Bernie is probably a Yankee fan and all's fair in love and war when it comes to the Yankee/Dodger rivalry.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS...BECAUSE THE SEC WAS IRRESPONSIBLE IN THIS MATTER...THAT SOME OF THE BAIL-OUT MONEY SHOULD GO TO THE VICTIMS.

THE SEC IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALLOWING $43 BILLION DOLLARS TO BE STOLEN FROM CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES.

IF EACH PERSON WHO GOT RIPPED OFF COULD RECEIVE ONE-HALF OF THEIR LOST THEN IT WOULD SOMEHOW HELP TAKE THE STING OUT OF US THINKING THAT THE SECURITY AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION IS A PLACE WHERE SCANDAL, BRIBERY AND DECEIT ARE ALLOWED TO EXIST.

So we are only talking about $21.5 Billion....and my guess is by the time all the victims learn about the SEC ignoring the facts of this case....the lawsuits against the SEC will amount to much more than $21.5 Billion.

THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OPERATION OF THE SECURITY AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION.

IF THEY AREN'T....THEN WE'VE GOT MUCH A BIGGER PROBLEM THAN A SCAM ARTIST CAVEMAN NAMED BERNIE MADOFF.

RENT INCREASE

STORY FROM CNN

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan – Kyrgyzstan is still in talks with the United States over a key U.S. air base that the Kyrgyz president wants closed, the country's prime minister said Thursday.

Lawmakers earlier decided to delay until next week a vote on a plan to close the Manas air base, which is an important element in the U.S. and NATO military campaign in Afghanistan.

The delay appeared to give the United States additional time to persuade Kyrgyzstan to back off from the closure decision announced Tuesday by President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. Kyrgyz officials previously had said the closure decision was irreversible.

Prime Minister Igor Chudinov did not give details, but said "We are in the process of negotiations with the Americans."

Bakiyev announced this week his country had decided to close the base, shortly after securing billions of dollars in loans and aid from Russia. Moscow resents the American presence in a country that it regards as part of its traditional sphere of influence.

Kyrgyzstan has repeatedly complained the United States is paying too little to lease the base. But Chudinov ruled out suggestions that the closure decision was connected to Russia's $2 billion assistance package.

"Talks on Russian aid have been going on for two years, and they were in no way related to the issue of the removal of the air base from Kyrgyzstan," Chudinov said.

Chudinov also said that his government has repeatedly raised the issue of the amount of rent paid for the air base. The sums being offered for the base were not economically realistic, he said.

In a visit to the base last month, Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, said the U.S. currently pumps $150 million annually into Kyrgyzstan's economy, including $63 million in rent for Manas.

***********************

SO...WHEN YOUR RENT IS BEING RAISED FROM $63 MILLION TO...LET'S JUST SAY $200 MILLION...THEN MAYBE IT'S TIME TO FIND A NEW LOCATION.

I REALIZE THE PROBLEMS INVOLVED WITH MOVING AN AIR BASE...BUT WOW...IT WOULD SEEM THAT ONE OF THE OTHER COUNTRIES IN VICINITY WOULD BE HAPPY TO COLLECT THAT AMOUNT OF RENT.

LOOK AT THE MAP

DO WE HAVE FRIENDS AND ALLIES OR DO WE NOT?

KEEP IN MIND THAT OUR MAIN OBJECTIVE IN THIS ISSUE IS ACCESS TO AFGHANISTAN

LOOK AT THE MAP AGAIN!

I UNDERSTAND THAT INDIA WOULD BE HARD BECAUSE OF TRAVELING THROUGH PAKISTANI AIR SPACE....

BUT THAT BRINGS ME TO MY REAL POINT

IS PAKISTAN OUR FRIEND....OR NOT?

SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD BE TIME TO EXPAND THAT FRIENDSHIP...IF THERE IS A FRIENDSHIP....AND SO WHAT IF THAT INCREASE IN FRIENDSHIP PISSES OFF INDIA.

WE'VE MADE SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE A HOUSEHOLD PHRASE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT INDIA IN AMERICA THAN SINCE GANDHI DID THE EARLY FOREST GUMP WALKING DEALIO ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

IF THE UNITED STATES WANTS TO SETTLE TALIBAN ISSUES IN AFGHANISTAN THEN IT WOULD APPEAR THAT SUCCESS WILL ONLY BE ACHIEVED BY INCREASING PRESENCE IN PAKISTAN

I'M NOT A BRAIN SURGEON.....which you've already figured out...BUT THIS SEEMS LIKE A RATHER SIMPLE EQUATION.

RUSSIAN HAS ALREADY PROVED THAT FULL OUT INTRUSION DOES NOT WORK....

IN FACT.... IT MIGHT BE WHAT ACTUALLY BROKE UP THE SOVIET UNION EVEN THOUGH YOU STILL BELIEVE IT WAS RONALD REAGAN.

IF BARACK OBAMA PLANS ON TRYING TO WIN THE WAR ON TERROR IN AFGHANISTAN AND DEFEAT THE TALIBAN...THEN IT CAN ONLY HAPPEN WITH TOTAL COOPERATION FROM PAKISTAN.

IF THAT'S NOT ON THE AGENDA....then we learned nothing from the last 50 years.

RUSSIA IS PROBABLY LAUGHING THEIR ASSES OFF AND HOPING THAT WE SPEND ALL OF OUR MONEY TRYING TO DEFEAT RELIGIOUS ZEALOTS IN MOUNTAINS THAT MAKE THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS LOOK LIKE MT. CALVARY....which in reality is actually a little hill.

AND MOST LIKELY THEY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE RENT INCREASE AT THE BASE IN KYRGYZSTAN

which by the way....isn't that the country where Doonesbury has Duke doing his lobby thing?

THE TRUTH IS.....PAKISTAN MIGHT NOT BE OUR FRIEND....SO THAT LEAVES INDIA AND TAJIKISTAN HAS OUR LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION SITES....

CUZ THE OTHER SIDE OF AFGHANISTAN IS NEVER GOING TO HELP US....UNLESS THE SHAH OF IRAN'S DAUGHTER CAN OVERTHROW THE AYATOLLAH...and that will probably happen when a monkey flies out of my ass.

President Obama should just resign and let JOE deal with all this crap.

Could you imagine that morning news as JOE was having his first cup of joe and reading the Washington Post.

One day you have the best and softest job in the world....and VP of the United States ranks right near the top....and the next day you inherit all this bulls..t.

Oh well...Barack asked for it....and now he's got it....and he better start with having a few beers with Pakistan....oh yeah I forgot....they don't drink. But they do do heroin so there's always that angle.

Maybe that horrible drug addict Michael Phelps can get involved.

HONESTLY...the press is treating this guy like he got drunk and drove through a grammar school at lunch.

A BONG HIT!

Relax!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A LITTLE POT SMOKING.....

....and by the way if he was high during the Olympics then all of America should be required to smoke pot every morning before going to work.

OH YEAH....I forgot there's no more jobs.

But the press really seems to enjoy when a SPORTS HERO can be dethroned....and I'm sure it has something to do with personal inadequacies within their own physical makeup.

LET'S ALL JUST SETTLE DOWN AND START WRITING E-MAILS TO PAKISTAN ASKING FOR COOPERATION IN DEALING WITH THE TALIBAN PROBLEM....

Oh you say that the Taliban actually operates out of the mountains in Pakistan?

WELL....THAT LOOKS LIKE A DEAL BREAKER ON THE FRIENDSHIP CHART.

so.....here's our other option.....

DEAR SLUMDOGS,

WE NEED TO TRAVEL THROUGH YOUR COUNTRY AND STEP OVER PAKISTAN...DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT? I THOUGHT NOT.

BEST REGARDS

BARACK, HILLARY and JOE.

PS. we will be sending Michael Phelps over to train anyone who wants to learn to swim. Do you guys have any pools? Oh yeah...you do have those rivers. Could you clean them up a little bit.....Michael's a stoner not a slob.

FACEBOOK IS FIVE and wondering

FACEBOOK TURNS FIVE

By Simon Hooper
CNN

(CNN)
-- A Web site started by a student as a way of staying in touch with friends celebrated its fifth birthday Wednesday as a billion-dollar business and a global phenomenon.
Around 15 million users update their statuses on Facebook daily.

Around 15 million users update their statuses on Facebook daily.

Mark Zuckerberg was 19 when he launched Facebook from a Harvard dorm in 2004. Within 24 hours, more than 1,000 of his Harvard classmates had signed up for the social-networking site and one month later half of those on campus had a profile.

Five years on, the Web site claims more than 150 million users worldwide while Zuckerberg, now 24, was named the youngest billionaire on the planet -- with an estimated fortune of $1.5 billion -- last year by Forbes magazine.

Writing in Time on Zuckerberg's inclusion in the magazine's 2008 list of the most influential 100 people in the world, Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist, said Zuckerberg had created "a social network that not only reflects your life but maybe expands it."

Along with sites such as MySpace and Bebo, Facebook has also been credited with bringing social networking into the mainstream, with politicians, businesses and celebrities jumping on the bandwagon.
iReport.com: From Harvard kids to Facebooking your Mom: How have things changed?

According to Facebook figures, around 15 million users update their statuses daily. More than 850 million photos are added to the site each month while the average user has 120 friends.

Meanwhile, Web sites such as Facebook were widely credited with helping Barack Obama secure victory in last year's U.S. presidential election by helping him connect via the Internet with younger, previously disengaged voters.

In a blog published Wednesday to mark Facebook's birthday, Zuckerberg said the site offered a way of making the world more open and giving people a voice to "express ideas and initiate change."

"The culture of the Internet has also changed pretty dramatically over the past five years. Before, most people wouldn't consider sharing their real identities online," Zuckerberg said. "But Facebook has offered a safe and trusted environment for people to interact online, which has made millions of people comfortable expressing more about themselves."

In a new Facebook first, the Web site featured at last week's World Economic Forum in Davos with users contributing to live discussions and polls that were flashed onto big screens during sessions with world leaders.

Speaking to CNN, Randi Zuckerberg, Mark Zuckerberg's sister, said politicians and businesses were looking to Facebook as "a place for insight and to get a real time pulse."

Yet questions still remain about the finances behind Facebook's remarkable expansion. The company has attracted more than $200 million in investment from venture capitalists while in 2006 it rejected a reputed $1 billion bid from Yahoo!

In 2007 Microsoft paid $250 million for a 1.6 percent share, a figure that gave Facebook a total projected value of some $15 billion.

But with the global financial crisis hitting Web advertising -- Facebook's core revenue stream -- those sort of figures now appear to belong to a bygone age.

"What Facebook isn't yet is a slam-dunk success," said Adam Lashinsky of Fortune magazine last month. "It is selling advertising, it is bringing in revenue but it's not wildly profitable even if it is profitable at all.

"There is no question that it has entered the zeitgeist but that doesn't mean that it has progressed beyond the stage of being cool or viral or exciting to being a mega-business success the way that Google, Microsoft or even its arch-competitor MySpace is."

Yet in an industry prone to short term fads and rapid evolution, Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday he remained committed to making sure that Facebook remained as relevant in the future.

"Building and moving quickly for five years hasn't been easy, and we aren't finished," he said. "The challenge motivates us to keep innovating and pushing technical boundaries to produce better ways to share information.

I'M PERSONALLY AMAZED THAT MOST PEOPLE I TALK TO, THAT HAVE FACEBOOK ACCOUNTS, DON'T KNOW WHO STARTED IT. WHEN YOU ARE 19 AND CAN WRITE AN ALGORITHM THAT CAN BE PATENTED AND IS SOCIALLY REVELANT....THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER.

I find it hard to believe that something which is used consistently 15 million times a day and has 150 million subscribers....will not find a way to survive....and I'm very curious to know what Randi (sister) looks like.

It's just a personal face thing and since this is about Facebook.....yadda, yadda yadda.

15 and 15 and 15

15 years old
15 minutes a day that I don't think about him....maybe
I get the feeling that people are through listening to my take on Sean's LEVEL CHANGING experience of 1994
but
I also have total resolve regarding NEO-ILLUMINATIONS and fully believe
that everything I really think about the LEVEL CHANGING experience of 1994
is covered in that project.

But then again I'm still trying to accept the fact that I'm one of those few unlucky fathers who has lost a teenage son.

IT'S A RATHER SMALL FRATERNITY...and it's a fraternity that I wished did not exist.
I don't want to belong to it but in truth I don't want anyone to belong.

BUT I DO
and
that's
that
