New high from a new low

Back in the Koufax/Drysdale era there was a story circulating that Koufax pitched a no-hitter and someone called Drysdale, who happened to be home for some unknown reason, and Drysdale's comment was......"did he win?"

Last night Jared Weaver of the Los Angeles Angles from a place in Anaheim...knows how that really feels.

Koufax had won his game 1-0
Weaver lost his game 1-0

The fact that the Dodgers could win a game without getting a hit could mean one of two things.....

They will now go on an incredible run that will take them to the playoffs
or
They will continue to not hit and we will have this unique game as our main 2008 Dodger memory.

I sure hope it's option number one but I've got a sneaky feeling it might be option number two......

Not hitting cannot be a good thing for a major league baseball team....unless you have guys named Koufax and Drysdale....and the last time I looked
they have
Lowe and Penny

It's really hard to congratulate a team on winning a game without getting a hit but history is history and the Dodgers entered another page into the record books.

A record book that contains detailed information pertaining to men playing with their hard balls and big sticks.

Ya gotta love it!

Thank you Dodgers for adding another moment to my list of cherish memories even though this one ends with a.......

huh?

By the way
the last blog stayed up extra long
because I want it to be known.

Read it again and make sure you tell your friends

the ones sitting on the fence

you know who they are!

I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW THAT I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW THAT I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING

Dear Karl Rove,
I realize that you are technically not involved in the current Presidential election but I'm just letting you know that I know that you know that I know that you know that I know what you are doing.
The simplistic concept of constructing John McCain's image into that of a '"MAVERICK" was a brilliant idea. Knowing that the democratic nominee would be either a woman or an African American made it very clear what was needed.

WHAT WAS NEEDED WAS AN IDEA THAT WOULD MAKE
FENCE SITTING DEMOCRATS
DECIDE THAT PERHAPS THE ALTERNATIVE CHOICE WOULD NOT BE SUCH A BAD CHOICE.

WHAT WAS NEEDED WAS SOMETHING THAT WOULD MAKE
FENCE SITTING DEMOCRATS
VOTE FOR THE REPUBLICAN BECAUSE IT WAS A SAFER ALTERNATIVE.

WHAT HAD TO BE CREATED WAS AN IMAGE THAT MADE ALL DEMOCRATS THINK INCORRECTLY ABOUT A PERSON'S BASIC POLITICAL BELIEFS.

WHAT HAD TO BE INCORPORATED WAS A VERBAL REJECTION OF THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT SO THAT THOSE FENCE SITTING DEMOCRATS WOULD THINK....

."OH...IF THEY DON'T LIKE HIM THEN HE MUST BE OK."

REGARDING THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE AS OK, BY THE FENCE SITTING DEMOCRATS, CAN RESULT IN A 2 TO 3 MILLION VOTE SWING.....AND WE ALL KNOW THAT AN ELECTION CAN BE WON OR LOST BY EVEN LESS VOTES.

WHAT WAS NEEDED WAS A PLAN TO MAKE THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE INTO SOMETHING THAT HE IS NOT. HE IS NOT A MAVERICK AND HE IS NOT A CENTER OF THE ROAD REPUBLICAN.

HE IS A RIGHT WING REPUBLICAN
HE BELIEVES THAT WAR IS NECESSARY
HE BELIEVES THAT NUCLEAR POWER IS THE ONLY OPTION

HE IS NOT A MAVERICK

HE IS ALMOST AN EXACT COPY OF WHAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE IN THE WHITE HOUSE.......ALTHOUGH HE IS PROBABLY SMARTER.

I really admire your tenacity Mr. Rove in divising this character but I just want you to know that I know that you know that I know that you know that I know what you are doing.

THE QUESTION FOR REST OF AMERICA

DO YOU KNOW?

another day another 1.3 million

Today the U.S. OPEN golf championship extends itself by one day while Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate battle for the coveted title. The winner of today's 18 hole playoff gets $1.3 million dollars and the loser gets somewhere around $700,000.

These guys work 4 days a week...if they are good and lucky. Some of them only work two days a week. I'm not talking about practicing for work because many of the tour players probably spend every day doing something related to improving their game.

It's a game that demands repetition.

And sometime the repetition can drive you crazy....especially during those moments of repetition where nothing seems to work. .
If you keep swinging and emphasize BALANCE then eventually your ball will respond correctly.
But your score will always stay in the range that the GOLF GODS determined would be your range. Every so often you have one of those days that lives forever in your memory bank.
Today would be a good day for Rocco Mediate to have one of those days.

The problem is that for him to have one of those days...his opponent would have to have an average day.....and an average day for Tiger Woods generally means 3 under par and another victory.

Everybody loves Tiger Woods but when an older guy (45) steps up to the tee and plays on an equal footing with one of the three greatest golfers who has ever played the game....then it's time to turn back the clock.....grab the Pabst Blue Ribbon....light up a Lucky Strike....dust off the classic novels and sit back and cheer for the old one.

It's not hard rooting for Rocco because he really is a good guy. Whether or not he can defeat Tiger probably depends on one left knee. If the knee holds up it will be another major for Tiger.......if it doesn't then it will be a first for Rocco and a very special day for those of us who are slightly closer to the next level.

It should be fun to watch..............................................but let's be perfectly clear.....it's nowhere near as much fun as actually playing....even when you are playing like a total goof ball.

Even on the worst days there are always a few moments that shine through....

kind of like...... life.

it's important to find those shining moments in every single day.....

GENERATION GAP EXPERIENCES

Every so often something happens that allows one generation to understand how another generation felt during a certain period in history. Those certain periods, that I am currently referring to, are usually negative experiences.

It's harder to recapture positive experiences because.......hell i have no idea why it's harder.... but it just simply is.

Last Thursday night Los Angeles Laker fans experienced one of those SOMETHINGS that brought generations together in a huge fashion

X generation, and whatever the new generation is called, were given a small doze of what baby boomers went through in the 60's regarding LAKER and BOSTON basketball games.

Thursday night was one game........

EVERY TIME THE LAKERS PLAYED BOSTON IN THE FINALS DURING THE 60'S....THEY LOST

EVERY FREAKIN TIME...and it wasn't until 1985 that they finally defeated the Beantown boys and by then it really didn't mean as much. Oh it felt good but it didn't take away the sting of all those repeated losses during the 60's.

I mean we had two of the greatest players in the history of basketball and both of them, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, probably looked at Thursday's game as just another BOSTON/LA experience.

Jerry West still lives and dies by Laker wins and losses, so I'm sure he took it harder than Elgin who has become a Clipper....but neither of them probably feels as bad as my young friend Seamus.

Seamus is 30 years old and this is his first true moment of tasting Boston/LA bulls..t.

And it is bulls..t when you blow a 24 point lead in a playoff game that would have tied the series and was suppose to make the Celtic players and fans extremely nervous.

THEY WENT FROM BEING ALMOST EXTREMELY NERVOUS
TO COCK OF THE WALK
IN ONE FREAKIN QUARTER.

EVERYTHING CHANGED
AND IT CHANGED QUICKLY
AND THERE WAS NOTHING ANYBODY COULD DO

IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT THE COACH DIDN'T DO
IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT THE PLAYERS DIDN'T DO
IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT THE REF'S DID OR DIDN'T DO

IT WAS BOSTON
CREATING A
GENERATIONAL GAP EXPERIENCE

THEY DON'T HAPPEN THAT OFTEN AND WHEN THEY DO WE SHOULD TAKE A MOMENT AND JUST BE
THANKFUL

THOSE OF US WHO ARE BABY BOOMERS DON'T WISH TO INFLICT PAIN ON THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS BUT WE DO WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND SOME OF THE THINGS WE'VE BEEN THROUGH THAT MAKE US WHAT WE ARE.

Of course there were some other "occurrences" that took place during the 60's that just might have had stronger influences on our behavior but those fringe experiences, pertaining to sports and entertainment events, ALSO AFFECTED US IN WAYS THAT ARE HARD TO EXPLAIN....

UNLESS YOU ALSO FEEL THE PAIN

Welcome to the select world of LAKER/BOSTON pain.

and the only thing that will minimize the event of last Thursday is for the Lakers to come back and win three in a row....and that will probably happen around the same time that a monkey flies out of my ass.

Everybody knows that the Lakers weren't even suppose to be in the finals this year but that still doesn't help ease the pain of Thursday night.

WHAT WILL REALLY HELP IS NEXT YEAR WHEN THE LAKERS ARE BACK IN THE FINALS WITH THEIR FULL TEAM AND THE BLOW THE CELTICS AWAY...

The problem with that picture is that Boston probably won't be back in the Finals.....they are getting a bit long in the tooth.....which brings me to the nice side of the story.

KEVIN GARNETT deserves a ring....and no matter how much I moan and groan...that might be the entire reason for this current...

GENERATIONAL GAP EXPERIENCE

Sometimes we just learn to accept defeat in sports by understanding the personalities involved on the other side of the court....or diamond...or field....or arena.

It's very easy to understand why this is happening to the Lakers....RIGHT NOW....THIS YEAR....when you learn a bit about KG.

The only thing I can say about him is I was really excited when rumors were circulating last year that he might become a Laker. KG and KOBE.....now that would have been a WOW....but apparently the price was too high.

(Rumor has it that the Timberwolves wanted Jerry Buss's daughter and five Laker girls)

I'm not asking anyone to root for Kevin Garnett during the playoffs....I'm just saying that sometimes good things happen to good people....and don't forget....Kobe already has three rings.

Of course the series isn't over and strange things can happen in the world of sports.....

hell...... strange things can happen in the world...... PERIOD!

Joe Lieberman is a prime example of how strange things can be in the world of politics

what's up with that guy?

And last but surely not least....Tim Russert's family will never believe that Friday the 13th is NOT THE UNLUCKIEST DAY OF THE YEAR......

EVERYBODY REALLY ADMIRED TIM RUSSERT AND TRUSTED THAT HE WAS GOING TO ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS AND THAT'S NOT A COMMON TRAIT FOR MOST PEOPLE IN THE MEDIA.

HE SEEMED LIKE A VERY NICE MAN

HE WILL BE MISSED and Friday the 13th becomes a extremely hard day to simply explain away...as just another day....for the Russert family.

Reality can make sporting events seem rather trivial....and suddenly a basketball game means absolutely nothing.

ANOTHER GENERATIONAL GAP EXPERIENCE....the kind that make baby boomers understand their parents experiences during World War 11

"participate with joy ..... in the sorrows of the world"

Joesph Campbell

It was just a freakin game...

a very important freakin game...but still.....a game.

AND THOSE OF US FROM LOS ANGELES.... HAVE ALREADY HAD YEARS OF EXPERIENCE TRYING TO DIGEST THAT BOSTON PILL.....

NOW YOU YOUNGER FOLKS HAVE A TASTE......

A BITTER PILL......TO BE SURE

BUT

A GENERATIONAL GAP EXPERIENCE

Two BIG BROWNS in the same week

Tomorrow a horse named BIG BROWN has a chance to make history but last Tuesday another big brown truly stepped into the history books.

Barack Obama is a tall brown man so therefore he becomes the other BIG BROWN.

Serendipity strikes again but of course the Horse still needs to win for the story to go forward...

And if the horse wins....then it's up to Barack to complete the EXACTA in November....which could conceivably be much harder than anything the horse faces tomorrow in New York.

John McCain is a warrior and he is a politician and that combo can never be counted out......

The problem with the other BIG BROWN is that the American public is just getting to know him... whereas McCain has a huge head start on the familiarity scale.....and that aspect is huge when selecting the next President of the United States.

But first things first.....

Let's get the Horse home for the first Triple Crown in 30 years and then we can concentrate on getting the other BIG BROWN elected.

It won't be easy but then again you already knew that.

THE HORSE WILL HAVE AN EASIER TIME OF IT....

********

BY THE WAY....SEVEN GAMES IS THE ONLY WAY THE LA/BOSTON SERIES CAN END.....

ANYTHING LESS THAN SEVEN WILL BE A DISAPPOINTMENT
JUST LIKE A LANDSLIDE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION....LANDSLIDES ARE BORING
EVEN IF YOUR GUY WINS

I LIKE SEVENTH GAMES AND LATE RETURNS...even though 2000 was a bit much even for me.

I honestly don't know if the Lakers can beat Boston....but the only way BIG BROWN can lose is by falling down....and since it's horse racing anything is possible...

Oh and one other thing of extreme importance.....

BARACK.....shallow hard and pick Hillary....it's the only logical thing to do...

UNITE THE PARTY

Russell, Baylor, Cousy, West, Bird and MAGIC

The NBA was built by Boston Celtic dominance and continual dethroning attempts by the Lakers....and being a LA boy it seemed like it would never end with a Laker victory. The Lakers back in the day of Elgin Baylor and Jerry West were the best team until they played the Celtics in the playoffs and then disaster.

I can't say for sure but it seems like the Boston Celtics and the UCLA Bruins are the only two teams in basketball to have extremely long streaks. Bruins won 10 in a row....I think....(I'm a Trojan fan so there are some facts and figures that don't stick when it comes to UCLA)....and the Celtics won 8 in a row.

I'm not sure which one of those streaks is more impressive....but it's probably UCLA because players change....but a Professional team winning 8 times in a row is impressive....and of those 8 championships at least 5 were achieved against the Lakers......AT LEAST....it might have been 6 and it might have been 7........

As a kid it seemed like the Lakers lost to Boston every year in the playoffs.......and when the jinx was finally broken in 1985 it seemed surreal. Then when Magic defeated Bird in 1987 it finally felt right....even though the 8-2 record favored the Celtics....the Lakers had won two in row against them and would eventually even the score......

WHO REALIZED THAT IT WOULD TAKE 21 YEARS FOR THESE TWO HISTORIC FRANCHISES TO MEET AGAIN?

The Lakers did their part and kept going to finals every so often....winning some and losing a few but the Celtics never recovered from 1987....and it wasn't just Bird losing to Magic that left a bad taste....it was also the death of Len Bias, 48 hours after being drafted as the number one pick.

Of course no one needs to feel sorry for the fans of Boston.....they've had a bit of success in other sports in recent years....but the Celtics are the cornerstone of professional sports in that town and 21 years is too long away from the dance.

The Celtics and Lakers in a final is truly a page out of history.

Of course everybody under the age of 25 doesn't give a flying f--k about NBA history but this week they will learn more about the NBA they they thought possible.....because the historical building blocks of the league are cemented by confrontations between the Celtics and the Lakers.

And although the Celtics are 8-2.....the fact is... they are 0-2 on the latest score sheet....even though 21 years has passed since the last Laker win.

The side-bar on this match-up is Phil vs RED.....

Red Auerbach, the late coach of the Celtics has 9 championships.......Phil Jackson has 9 championships. This is a personal thing for Phil and whether he deserves it or not doesn't matter. He is the ZEN Master and winning and losing isn't really what it's all about.....it's much deeper than winning and losing.....it's about staying calm in a crisis.....

......and of course dating the bosses daughter......

There are so many stories that will emerge this week and people who haven't watched basketball in awhile will tune in.......

I'm one of those guys who turns on a pro game with 5 minutes to go because they are usually tied at that point and then the real game starts.....but I will be watching from the tip off because....

Hell....it's THE CELTICS AND THE LAKERS.....

DODGERS AND THE YANKEES
NICKLAUS VS PALMER
MC ENROE VS CONNERS
MONROE VS THE STUDIOS
BOBBY KENNEDY VS THE MAFIA
NIXON VS THE YOUTH OF AMERICA

IT'S A PAGE FROM HISTORY AND LOOKING AT BOTH TEAMS CLOSELY IT MIGHT BE THE ONLY TIME THESE TWO TEAMS MEET IN THIS DECADE....

THEY MISSED THE 90'S....

IF THIS IS THE ONLY ONE IN THIS DECADE....THEN SO BE IT......

HOPEFULLY KOBE VS KG WILL KEEP BOTH COAST WELL ENTERTAINED.

IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE RECORD BETWEEN THE TWO TEAMS WAS 8-3 AFTER THIS ENCOUNTER.
