Seamus Garrity......guest

2/3/14

It's been 20 years.

Today I have my first parent-teacher conference, and I am sure they are going to rave about my amazing daughter. I have no doubt about it. They already do with regularity. She's fun and easy she is to get along with. She really brightens up the world, and has given me so much perspective on life.

20 years ago today, when I was 15 years old, my best friend died suddenly and in the strangest of ways. He went into cardiac arrest in his mom's arms. I think the paramedics revived him briefly but I don't think he ever regained consciousness. If I am not mistaken his last word was "mom." She told me this story through the most intense tears I had ever seen just days later. The extreme pain and confusion I felt personally at the time was greater than any I had ever felt before, but hers was worse than I could understand. When she said "I know you were his best friend," her voice was cracking even though she was already crying. This was the first time that that thought of he and I being best friends had occurred to me. It was a natural friendship and we really just always got along.

His death changed me permanently in ways that I used to think made me deeper. That's literally what I thought, that his death had deepened me as a person. For a long period of time after his death my thoughts were only about him. Not just everyday, but maybe every minute. I did things and saw people and went out but I was usually thinking about Sean, trying to fathom that he was gone forever, or trying to imagine where he was physically. These thoughts went on so ceaselessly that it seemed like part of me became planted in another dimension, and all my decision making and even my well being came from that other side. I could feel things before they happened and I knew I could get as out of control as I wanted and that somehow I would be protected. There was a special kind of magical feeling that I had in all of my thinking and all of my behavior. And this never really went away.

The thing that is striking to me on this day in particular, 2/3/14, is how long it has been. How far removed I am from being 15. Sean and I would get together when I cam home from boarding school and we would hang out a lot. We'd go to the mall and try to find girls. We'd hang out at my house with the group of friends that we had, and we would talk. We would generally talk about girls. He did not believe me that I had had sex. He was really interested in snowboarding, something I had the privilege of doing everyday in boarding school, and he was really interested in playing bass. My last memories of him were from Christmas break 1993. First I remember we would go on long bike rides, and one day I had All Apologies stuck in my head, just the guitar part, and I though that I had come up with it. I was singing it and singing it and kind of bragging, and he couldn't place where it was from. When we were on the bike path at the beach he finally said "last song of Nirvana." It was the last song on that album which was still new. Maybe that happened in the summer. One thing that did happen in the winter was we went to see Nirvana at the Forum. And I remember New Years Eve a few nights later. We were just walking around our neighborhood. I broke a friends window, he may have pushed me into it.

My very last memory of seeing him alive was the morning I left to go back to school. We had been drinking the night before. There were four of us there but only he and I were drinking. I remember he had taken a beer out of my fridge and started drinking it. He was fucking with me to see if I would get mad and worried about my family finding out. I didn't care. I had already begun my drinking career about a year prior. I don't really remember anything we talked about that night. I do kind of remember the sound of his voice. He had very cool inflections. He had very graceful hands. He was very funny. He could kick my ass, but for some reason I felt like he mostly let me lead in the hierarchy of our group. I don't know why. But that morning I left all four of us were sleeping in my room. I had to get up early to get on a plane. I gave everyone 5. He was on the top bunk and I gave him 5 last. It was like a handshake-high 5. And he said "later dude." He was amazing. I walked out of the room and as I shut the door I heard a voice inside my head say "and that was the last time I saw my friend alive."

I talked to him maybe a couple more times on the phone. The last time I remember talking to him was around the Northridge Earthquake. His apartment had been hit hard and he really tried to convey to me how intense it was. The night I found out he died, 20 years ago today, I heard the phone ring in my dorm. It was late at night. After lights out. The phone rang and rang. As soon as I heard it ringing I knew he was dead. I don't know why I knew that. I knew it was another friend of ours calling. I acted surprised when my dorm parent came in to get me. I acted surprised when my friend told me over the phone. I acted strange for a long time.

The thing that compelled me to write something about this is how different my life is today. How different it is from how I thought it would be. I'm thinking about how much more life I have had than him. Todays date seems futuristic in a lot of ways. I think about what he and I would think of my life today. I know that we couldn't really fathom it. I couldn't explain to us what it's like to look at my wife in her eyes and the sense of completeness that she can bring to me. I couldn't explain to us what it's like to hold my daughter and make her laugh and to hear her laugh. We wouldn't understand and I don't know how interested we would be in it. But one thing that I do understand better is how his parents felt when he was gone. I can only imagine it. It the most terrifying part of my day when that thought creeps in.

Soon after he died my mom and I were driving. It was a summer day, I think. Someone had given me a bunch of pictures of Sean and I was going through them in the car. One of the pictures was from the 5th grade talent show. He was lip singing a song. My mom asked "what song was he he singing?"

I said, "this one!" and I turned on the radio and it was playing. On the radio. It was Patience. That was awesome.

I wonder if we would have grown apart. The odds are. We definitely would have kept in touch, although I don't know who I would be today if he hadn't died. I am certain that he death greatly effected the trajectory of my life. The depth of my coolness. He became something so profound to me. He became my link to the other side. He became the guide that brought my consciousness to another dimension, and I have though about him every single day since the day he died, 7,300 days ago.

20 years ago today St. Pepper taught the band to........

And 2/3 comes around one more time......I didn't realize that Buddy Holly's plane creahed on this day but of course that was a very long time ago and while 20 years also sounds like a long time ago it really isn't when it comes to hearttime.

Hearttime has it's own reality and each and every person's hearttime is different.

We get a lifetime to figure our our heart
and then we just return to the start
it's not easy being
it's not hard seeing
and yet
it all appears translucent
like
a
billowy silk veil
just blowing in front of my timesail

I don't like this day
because it only exists as a memory
of one really sad event

and I'll feel better tomorrow
when the 3rd of February
has just simply come
and
went

It was 20 years ago today St.Pepper taught the band to play....

and maybe I'll just put on that album and let the
day
drift
away

In honor of you Sean...with a little help from your friends.....

Bee the news

I've written five + "articles" over the last four years on the Colony Collapse Disorder.  I can't imagine anyone not being aware of this issue but then again everyday I am shocked by what people don't know, or better yet................don't care to know.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_collapse_disorder

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that a virus called TOBACCO RINGSPOT is a pollen-borne pathogen that causes blight in soy crops and that TRSV is replicating through their Apis mellifers hosts and spreading to mites that travel from bee to bee.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apis_mellifera

Traces of the virus were detected in every part of the bee....except the eyes.
Every part except the eyes!?

This is the second virus associated with investigation into why  bees are disappearing.  The first one was called Israeli acute paralysis virus....IAPV.

So now we have TRSV and IAPV causing DEATH to BEES but the investigators say they haven't actually determined the cause.

The complexity of our Universe is so layered and so intertwined with mystery and awe that it boggles the mind when I actually see normalcy being created on a daily basis.

Happiness might be based on how much one can ignore

And once more I come back to the magic word.................LOVE

The Creator of the Universe included the ability to think within our physical reality
but the gift of thinking that we can love is an even bigger gift.  Love is an abstract word
to simply interpret a feeling we have.  That feeling can be affected in the blink of an eye.

The challenge is to grow and nurture that gift in the face of extended information.

It's obviously not my job to find the reason for CCD but I love it when someone else finds something that can be included in the SOLVING THIS PROBLEM category.

WE NEED THE BEE
AND THE BEE NEED
WE

JUST A SIMPLE PHONE CALL, TEXT  or E_MAIL TO YOUR CONGRESSPERSON INFORMING THEM THAT YOU WANT TO SEE MORE RESEARCH DONE REGARDING CCD.

The BEE'S immune systems will thank you every single day for the rest of your life

"Play the Brothers"

This is simply about singing along with.......outside of the required church stuff.

I probably sang All you have to do is Dream about 500 times when it was released in 1958.  I had just turned 12 and was beginning my first and last Little League season.  Of course later I would have a 16 year Little League experience but coaching and playing are world's apart.

Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream, dream, dream, dream

I had my first girlfriend at the age of 12 and although she was an older woman of 15 I'm pretty sure she liked my voice.  I recall that she liked my Elvis imatations and never told me to shut up when I sang. I realized later that she only liked me becasue I had a horse, but when one is 12 and playing center field it's hard to recognize female deception.  Actually, I'm still fully capable of being fooled by a beautiful woman and still dreaming that it might happen.

When I want you in my arms
When I want all your charms
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Dream, dream, dream, dream

In July of 1958 King Creole was released.  It was playing with April Love.  In 1958 you got a cartoon or two and two features and I remember that my new babe and I were driven to the theater by my mom.  April Love played first and then King Creole.  At that point I was a big Elvis fan but after that movie he literally took over as "King."   It turns out that Elvis regarded King Creole as his favorite of the 31 films he made and I am in total agreement.  But I still had a girl and I still was dreamin.

When I feel blue in the night
And I need you to hold me tight
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Dream

In 1958 Gigi won the Academy Award for best picture.  I always thought mom named my sister Gigi because of the movie but since she was born in 1952 I have to assume that's not true......and it still amazes me how perceptive I can be.  DUH might have been invented for me.

I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
anytime night or day
only trouble is, gee whiz
I'm dreamin my life away

Elvis was the King but right behind at court was Ricky Nelson and the Everly Brothers.  They had the hair and they had the sing-a-long-songs. Ricky was 18 and had simply been the most popular kid on TV since 1952.  Ricky Nelson from the age of 12 to 16 had the last laugh and the last word everytime he spoke on the Ozzie and Harriet Show.  In 1958 Ricky released his first single...Poor Little Fool.  Elvis had gone into the army in March so Ricky took over and once a week on TV we could watch him do a song and show that slow blink maneuver.

I need you so that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Dream, dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream

In 1958 The Dodgers played their first season in Los Angeles at the Memorial Coliseum and finished 7th place in the National League.....back when there were 8 teams.  I remember being able to listen to the young announcer on my portable radio in my backyard with a Louisville Slugger in my hand. The fact that in three months (God Willing) I will be able to still hear Vin Scully announce a Dodger game makes everything seem ok....and slighty bizzare at the same time.

KIND OF LIKE..................... LIFE.

I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is, gee whiz
I'm dreamin my life away

I have so many fond memories of my 12 year old season and singing along with Elvis, Ricky and the Everly Brothers just stands out.  I'm fairly certain that my older chick dumped me sometime in the fall for my friend Howard Herrick because I recall him wanting to punch out my lights when I rode my horse up her driveway and Christmas lights were shinning. It was the end of two relationships....and it's so odd how that pattern continued into my adulthood.

I Rode my horse up her driveway could be a new porno title, don't you think?

I need you so that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream, dream, dream, dream

On February 3rd 1959 a plane crashed and the music died......but that's another entire history lesson that Don McClean expressed much better than I ever could.

I remember being home from school that day with the Chicken Pox.......and little did I realize that 35 years later the music really would die for me.

I accept the fact that February 3rd 1994 is the by far and away the absolute worst day of my life but one thing I am able to do is
dream
dream
dream

and remember

When Lily was two and three years old (1988-89) I would take her back to her mom's house in Topanga Canyon after a weekend. It was a 40 minute drive from Santa Monica. During the spring there was Sean and his baseball (and yes my baseball too, as coach) and his time with her at my house is such a special memory for me. He was 7 years older and a perfect older brother.

Everytime I would drive her home she would sit in her car seat and simply say in that little tiny precious girl's voice.....

"Play the brothers"  with a little brooklyn accent as only 2 and 1/2 year old can do.

I would find the Best of the Everly Brothers cassette and Lily would listen to me sing-a-long and she would slowly start to hum....put her thumb in her mouth........and fall fast asleep.

And all I have to do is
Dream
dream
dream.......

Debt was created by both parties and must be solved the same way

Last night at a party I had a short conversation with a beautiful young woman who has taken on the National Debt as her primary focus in life.  While it was a very short chat I could see and hear how vitally important the subject was for her.  I wish I could tell you the name of her newly formed organization but I was distracted by her looks and since shallow can often be my occasional mindpartner  I confess to not listening to the actual details but I can quite easily describe her looks.

Fact: this young woman has started a PAC in order to bring the National Debt to the forefront of the election process.

First and foremost, as the charts below will verify, the isssue of our National Debt is an issue that demands BI-PARITSAN attention.  Both primary parties have created the numbers and both parties have chosen to adhere to personal agenda's while completely ignoring the thought process that leads to somehow addressing the BIG PICTURE.

Bess, the youngest PAC creator that I've ever even heard about, asked me if I knew what the National Debt was and I answered $175 Trillion.....WHICH IS SO WEIRD BECAUSE I ACTUALLY PRIDE MYSELF ON KNOWING IMPORTANT FACTS AND FIGURES AND IN TRUTH I KNEW IT WAS $17 TRILLION AND YET BLURTING OUT SUCH AN OBSCENE FIGURE JUST HAPPENED BECAUSE I WAS SLIGHTY ON THE high side of consciousness.

So that you understand the need for a bi-partisan solution you simply need to look at the following two charts.

As with every artist......there is no apologizing when it comes to inspiration formation........
the same rule must apply to a political mind that seeks solutions to our socioeconomic conundrums.

THE NATIONAL DEBT
is
one of those issues
such
as
GLOBAL WARMING
and
NUCLEAR WASTE CLEANUP
and of course
TEXTING IN THE PRESCENCE OF SOMEONE WHO IS TRYING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH THE PERSON TEXTING WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST REGARD FOR THE PERSON
STANDING THERE
IN REAL TIME PAUSE
HELL
that will really be a problem for our children's children.

I mentioned to Bess that compromise and forgiveness are fundamental to the central path of problem solving

 Compromise
and
Forgiveness

When one truly thinks about how a problem can be solved while confronting a single person who seems to be causing the said problem, then at some point if compromise and foregiveness are NOT inserted into the equation then most likely a solution will not be formulated and still more likely a large deep canyon will be constructed that results in time simply passing and said situation then becomes a GIANT ALBATROSS hanging on the very edge of the relationship.  That relationship will often times dissolve into courteous greetings or even worst......NO GREETINGS.

Our three governmental bodies have allowed major issues to be exsaperated and people don't usually consider The Supreme Court to be part of the problem but when one considers that the true benefit of becoming President of The United States is the opportunity to  select ONE Supreme Court Justice or God willing TWO Justices during their elected term.

The Supreme Court seems to be above reproach but they seem to have the final say when it comes to establishing laws.

It should be against the law to allow the National Debt to strangle the lifestyle of our children's children

It should be against the law to continue creating new Nuclear Waste without the slighest idea on how to clean up the existing problems

It should be against the law to ignore the possiblity that Climate Change might be caused by human beings trying to achieve positive bottom lines for shareholders.

I understand that the Supreme Court can only review the cases that are presented to them but I've always thought that since they are one of the three branches of the goernemnt which determines how we live our lives....then perhaps they should start requesting more from the
elected officals regarding the creation of laws.  They are suppossedly the best and the brightest of the three branches.  Since they never seem to be reprimanded by ANYONE then maybe they could expand their role.

Didn't mean to wander off subject but when it comes to compromise and foregiveness it is very important to understand that the LAWS OF THE LAND might also need to involve some alterations.

WHEN CONSTITUTIONALISTS START SCREAMING ABOUT CONSTITUTIONAL  ISSUES BEING COMPROMISED  I ALWAYS CRINGE.    THE CREATORS OF OUR CONSTITUTION REALLY HAD NO IDEA HOW THE WORLD WOULD LOOK TODAY AND NO MATTER HOW ONE BUILDS A HOUSE FOR ONE FAMILY THERE IS NO SOLUTION WHEN 50 FAMILIES MOVE INTO THE HOUSE EXCEPT FOR TOTAL CHAOS.

The numbers game of the National Debt becomes too convoluted that for solutions to be implemented............ EVERYTHING needs to be included in the political algorithm.

EVERYTHING means everything when we talk about spending

PLEASE CLICK ON IMAGE FOR FULL VIEW

And I can assure you that addressing insane government pensions might be the toughest nut to crack.
Both parties always jabber about Social Programs and Military because that diverts the issue from things that they created for themselves and their fellow goverment employees.

AND IT ALSO MEANS REVENUE GENERATING

As you can see the issue is extremely complex and breaking it all down into viable and reasonable solutions is quite a task.

(And just why isn't there a weekly national lottery?  Every week the money could go to a different program.)

THE ONLY THING ONE CAN DO IS BRING AWARENESS TO THE ISSUE
And for that I salute the young PAC creator (and once I learn the name I will pass it along)

How the FIXABLE SOLUTIONS get actually fixed cannot be done until  a reasonable amount of the general population becomes aware of the situation.

When I think about a nation where 45% of the eligible voters turn DON'T TURNOUT for a Presidential election I assume that making people aware of anything as abstract as the National Debt will be quite a chore.

But Bess the PAC maker, is really attractive and being the shallow thinker I am.....I believe that young beautiful women will absolutely have the best chance of getting the tale told.

PEOPLE HAVE A TENDENCY TO STOP AND LISTEN TO A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN
and that's not my rule
but
it's
a
truth.

I personally care more about Climate Chnage and Nuclear related problems but I'm just a guy who sees those things as being species killers so it ranks a bit higher than our economic quagmires. Quagmires that we seem to always either solve, or at the very least juggle to the next group of elected officials.

CLIMATE CHANGE
and
NUCLEAR POLLUTION PROBLEMS
can really give $ problems a back seat
on the road
to
wherever this great country is
traveling

We are a young country traveling toward a certain concept of trying to achieve a level of happiness and financial stability for the most amount of people possible.

Aren't we?

Addressing the National Debt is one of those issues...addressing with responsible attention given to the health
of
the
Collective American Soul must be part of the framework.

And the Collective American Soul seems like a good subject for the next Mind Jazz post.

Diamonds are a problem

This morning I was reading a story about a 83 year jewel thief who apparently has been doing her thing for a long time and in various parts of the world.  Doris Payne is her name and obviously, since we know who she is, she can't be that good at her chosen line of work.

The interesting part of the story lies not with Doris but with the diamond ring in question that she lifted from one store and then tried to sell to another store.

The first store (both stores located in the Indian Wells area) wanted $22,500 for the diamond ring.

The second store said it was flawed and offered Doris $800.

Now, I don't want to mention the name of either store but one of those two stores has a major problem.

Anyone who has ever bought anything at store #1, and I suspect that being located in Indian Wells that there have been some serious purchases, has to be very concerned.

If it turns out that store #2 simply has a lying son of a bitch then everything will be ok for store #1.

BUT.....
knowing how extremely weird the entire diamond market is just makes me think that both stores are sincerely praying that no one reads the newspaper.
BUT....
This is the type of story that will resurface on the Internet and among friends at the water cooler and among family at the holiday gathering.
SO....
It would seem quite logical that unless one of the two stores admits to being a rip off artist then both stores will see a large drop in traffic.

THE BIGGER DIAMOND PICTURE is really scary.

Just stop for a sec and think about the three big rumors we've all heard over the years.

THE RUSSIANS HAVE MILLIONS OF DIAMONDS STORED UNDERGROUND

DE BEERS RUMORS OF MONOPOLIZING THE MARKET ARE NOT RUMORS CONSIDERING THAT A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT WAS SETTLED IN 2011

THE CHINESE HAVE MORE DIAMONDS THAN BOTH RUSSIA AND THE DE BEERS

SIDE BAR FACT:
The formation of natural diamond requires very specific conditions—exposure of carbon-bearing materials to high pressure, ranging approximately between 45 and 60 kilobars (4.5 and 6 GPa), but at a comparatively low temperature range between approximately 900 and 1,300 °C (1,652 and 2,372 °F). These conditions are met in two places on Earth; in the lithospheric mantle below relatively stable continental plates, and at the site of a meteorite strike.[10]

SECOND SIDE BAR FACT:
Most natural diamonds are formed at high temperature and pressure at depths of 140 to 190 kilometers (87 to 120 mi) in the Earth's mantle. Carbon-containing minerals provide the carbon source, and the growth occurs over periods from 1 billion to 3.3 billion years (25% to 75% of the age of the Earth). Diamonds are brought close to the Earth′s surface through deep volcanic eruptions by a magma, which cools into igneous rocks known as kimberlites and lamproites.

THIRD SIDE BAR FACT:
Unless you actually know how to look a refracted light then you will never have any idea if a diamond dealer is telling you the truth.

DORIS PAYNE IS A JEWEL THIEF

THE DIAMOND INDUSTRY MIGHT BE A MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM THAN DORIS PAYNE

It makes a lot more sense to find a really good artist in your local community who can design a one of a kind setting......what you put in that setting is secondary to the artwork........

Of course you could have the lovable Uncle Irv who's been a diamond merchant since Truman was in office and he's been holding the most beautiful diamonds in a safe so that he could hand down his legacy to his family.

Doris Payne doesn't have one of those and I suspect that she will be spending some time with Uncle Sam's housekeeping wing of the federal government.

One of those people, or both, from store #1 and Store #2......should be right down the hall.

Things just changed

November 22, 1963.

From 1946 to 1963 America had a certain attitude.
Baby Boomers were popping out everywhere and
there was a certain feeling

INVINCIBLE might be the single best word description

And then in Dallas, Texas a moment in time took hold and things just changed and invincibility was replaced by

REALITY

CLEAR CRISP SOLID
REALITY

NO ONE WAS INVINCIBLE

but at the same time new MUSIC had arrived from England and reality suddenly had a fresh sound to go along with the hard hard edge.

And some of us started dancing and getting freaky and others went along with the hard edge flow and went to war while still others found that there was nothing better than being in school.

Looking back I'm pretty sure those who stayed in school, started dancing and getting freaky probably have the best memories even though they aren't sharing those memories with their children.......

Whatever anyone wants to say about Presidents and their achievements there is one certain fact about JFK and this fact dominates our American mentality

HE WAS BY FAR AND AWAY
THE
BEST LOOKING PRESIDENT
AMERICA HAS EVER HAD

(RR was way too old for this award)

BEST HAIR
BEST TEETH
BEST SMILE ( reagan and jfk tied)
BEST SENSE OF HUMOR
BEST GOLFER
BEST SPEAKER
BEST LOOKING WIFE
BEST BROTHER

When political historians start analysing his Presidency they really don't ever talk about the things that really matter.  Those 8 items above really really mattered to the American people.

IN FACT ALL EIGHT OF THOSE ITEMS.....STILL MATTER TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

And on November 22, 1963 a beautiful man had his head blown off and life has never been the same on Elm St. USA.

We always have a touch of caution hanging over our heads and I think that tiny cloud started in Dallas, Texas in 1963.

THE BIG CLOUD THAT FORMED FROM DEC 7 1941 WAS FIXED
THE BIG CLOUD THAT FORMED IN GERMANY IN 1938 WAS FIXED

the little cloud formed on 11/22/63
will never
be
fixed

It just sits there
and
waits
for another
storm
to
hit
our
hearts

He's back and it was a Grandparent dealio

I actually never looked into the reason that Doonesbury was on vacation for 3 1/2 months but his new "spots" indicate that he was busy being a new Grandpa....and as far as excuses go, that's one of the better ones.

Grand Parenting appears to be a special gift that either can be graciously accepted and enjoyed or denied and rejected.  We all know Grandmothers who reject the concept for quite awhile when it first materializes.

Sometimes it comes much too early and sometimes very unexpectedly but when it comes to those who have organized their family structure in such a manner that allows time and space for being able to help out around the age of 60.....then it becomes a joyful experience.

My guess is that it's a 50/50 chance that it's a joyful experience.

Baby Boomer Grand Parents will perhaps move that 50/50 to 60/40 just because of the numbers.

When I think of Grandparents I think of Norman Rockwell interpretations because those visual images simply make more sense than reality......

Or at least my reality.......and for sure the reality of anyone who never had children.

I suppose their are families that slide through life and simply experience the normal cycle of birth, youth, middle age, old age and death without any uncalled for abnormalities which interrupt that cherished cycle.....I suppose.

I guess I might even know a few of those families.

We have 300 million people in the US and if 10 million families live a two generation life cycle without tragedy I'd be surprised.  People dying at an older age is not a tragedy....just part of the cycle.

As I write this piece I realize that I'm just not the person to explain what it's like to live a tragedy free life cycle even though I have those Rockwell images deeply embedded in my Psyche.

What one wants doesn't grant what one has and I have no excuse for why I'm even bringing up tragedy except for the fact that 3 1/2 months of Doonesbury reruns has left me slightly depressed.

His social commentary in the morning newspaper is how I start my day......after a short walk to the store to purchase the product that allows me to hold the item which in turn allows me to see the "strip.".......it's called a NEWSPAPER for those of you who have gone completely electronic.

It's actually made of paper and is filled with fresh ink.......two things I value quite highly.

I also value Grand Parenting when it's done correctly.

Mr. Doonesbury is now a GP and I'm sure he's loving every minute of it.

Doonesbury is REALLY PISSING ME OFF but WISDOM IS ON THE WAY

I'VE BEEN SIMPATICO WITH MR. DOONESBURY FOR TWO MONTHS.....TWO MONTHS AND 14 DAYS TO BE EXACT.....AND I'M LOSING PATIENCE.

The fact is he still works on Sunday and with his success....one day a week is probably acceptable......but what that means is that he's going to have to work really hard on that one day......

SEVEN COLUMNS IN ONE DAY

I could actually write seven blogs in one day....but the demand doesn't seem to be there.

Now I FULLY understand how much more work goes into a Doonesbury column but if you keep in mind what kind of idiot I really am....than you will see that it takes equal effort to make seven Doonesbury "columns" and seven Mind Jazz "columns."

This Saturday night at Robert Berman Gallery in Bergamont Station, Santa Monica
NORTON WISDOM

"IT'S ABOUT FU*KING TIME"
part one
6-9  NOV 16

almost better than DOONESBURY.....

I REALLY WISH I COULD BE THERE!

but I'm really busy trying to write seven blogs in one day...and I picked Saturday to do the work.

It will be crowded so get there early!

When I do.....

Family matters have kept me away and while I was going to stay quiet until Doonesbury returned on a daily basis I just couldn't wait that long.  By the way does anyone have any idea how long the Doonesmaster plans on staying away?

September 1st was my last article and Syria seems to have dodged the bullet even though it appears that chaos and internal struggles might be part of their MO for a very long time.  It's really back to the two factions of the Muslim religion and since hundreds of years haven't solved the problem I suspect that they don't really want to solve the problem....except of course by eliminating the other side.

Our government was shut down for awhile and the Chinese tried to pull a power play on currency but once one reads about the pollution in China then one will quietly keep their American dollars in tact.

We might not be pollution solvers but we have rules and laws on the books that send a message to those who choose to abuse their privileges.

China appears to not be addressing their pollution issues and air and water are both taking a huge hit as industrialization takes hold.  The amount of empty office buildings is another great story.  Sure is one way to put people to work but then if nobody wants to use the space, it starts looking like those underwater scenes from Speilberg's AI film.

The Dodgers almost made the World Series this year but it appears that Boston Beards rule....so it might not have mattered.  Is it better to lose in the World Series or miss the big show by one series?  I honestly don't have that answer because losing a World Series is hard so maybe the fact that they went home one series earlier reduces our disappointment level.  All I really know is that Dodger summer baseball in 2013 was as good as it gets and we won't see anything like it again for a very long time.  A steady strong team from start to finish is probably a better idea for 2014.  100-62 would be about right.

This is the longest I've gone in my adult life without going to a movie.  I'm totally shocked that RUSH by Ron Howard was a bust.  I would have thought by now that Opie would have a steady fan base that automatically generate $75 mil domestically.  I'll have to wait until it plays on HBO to try and figure out what happened.

BLACKFISH WAS SHOWN TWICE LAST WEEK ON CNN.  THAT'S A HUGE STORY. THE DOC WAS ONLY RELEASED A FEW MONTHS AGO.
Kudo's to CNN for making that happen.

ORCAS WILL NOT BE WORKING FOR SEA WORLD WITHIN THE NEXT DECADE AND BY ALL RIGHTS THEY SHOULD STOP
TODAY

IMAGINE RETURNING A CAPTURED ORCA WHOSE MOM HAS BEEN LOOKING FOR HIM FOR TEN YEARS.   The film indicated that lots of young Orcas were taken from their moms within two years of giving birth.

I THINK THAT'S A STORY.

AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE, or better known as OBAMACARE, is taking a huge hit due to ????????????????????
Did the government not use Larry Ellison for this project.  It seems that Oracle would have been a natural choice.
I hope the problem doesn't come down an OPEN BID story where the Department of Commerce picked  the lowest bidder to handle the roll out.
Ms. Sebelius seems to be taking the main slam but most likely it was a committee f..k up.
One of the things that seems to be bothering people is that anyone making more than 100,000 a year will have a steep increase in the premiums.  Time will tell if health cost will come down because of more people being insured.....but really, when was the last time anything came down in price.  They want $2 apiece at the car wash to wash the mats after charging $13.99 for the basic wash....and SS is only be increased by 1.5% because the government claims cost did not rise that much over the last year, and one air-filled Krispy Creme doughnut is $1.09.......and I could go on and on but if you are making more than $100,000 a year you don't give a flying f..k what I say.

By the way, I use the self wash car stops and I don't eat Krispy Creme doughnuts.......but SS is part of life.

The last of the 7 McAlevey boys from Maplewood, Missouri lost his wife of 62 years a few days ago.

My Uncle Raymond had 62 years of shared love and that's a real life love story....which are always the best kind.

I'd like to find 62 minutes that didn't cost me $2000.

Closing with my new favorite quote.....

ABE LINCOLN said the following......"WHEN I DO GOOD, I FEEL GOOD
WHEN I DO BAD, I FEEL BAD....
                                                                        THAT'S MY RELIGION"

Seriously.......... Syria neighbors not concerned?

Simple questions for September 1 2013

Don't Chemical Weapons
make
any
of
Syria's
neighbors
nervous?

I mean besides Israel?

We've sold a large boat load of weapons, including fighter jets, to both Egypt and Saudi Arabia so I'm thinking that maybe those next door neighbors might want to get involved. Doesn't Turkey have a extreme concern for Syria using weapons outlawed by International Law......which by the way seems silly when Nuclear Weapons are ok......but that's an entirely different subject, isn't it?

Once again the Wyatt Earp of Earth (WEOE) better known as The United States of America feels that it has to step in and make a statement by using more weapons.

If in fact using Chemical Weapons is against International Law then why don't the lawyers who oversee International Law simply freeze all Syrian financial transactions.....everywhere, with anyone.

That's an attention getter in Russia and China and any other country that wants to get paid for doing business with Syria.

Do International Laws mean anything?

Facts and Figures that you need to know about Syria

Syria has 20 million people. .....minus the 100,000 who have died in the last 2 years during the civil war.

Who ever linked civil and war together was quite a jester.

Syria is 75 percent Sunni Muslim, 10 percent Christian and 10 percent Shi'a Muslim

It's important to look around the neighborhood and see who is who
Saudi Arabia....Sunni
Iraq...................Shi'a
Turkey..............Sunni
Iran...................Shi'a
Pakistan and Afghanistan.....Sunni

THE STRUGGLE FOR DOMINANCE BETWEEN THE SUNNI AND SHI'A FACTIONS OF THE ISLAMIC FAITH CANNOT BE OVERLOOKED.
AND IN REALITY.....IT IS PROBABLY THE MAIN STRUGGLE  THAT KEEPS
THE ENTIRE REGION IN
CONSTANT
TURMOIL
Hating Israel doesn't count because Israel isn't trying to convert anyone to their religious belief system.
THE MAIN TURMOIL IS CAUSED BY
SUNNI VS SHI'A

Syria has a extremely bad reputation for violating human rights and terrorists groups are reportedly welcomed with open arms.

France ruled Syria from 1920 to 1946 under that famous phrase.....COLONIAL RULE.

President Bashar Assad's Birthday is September 11th.

THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 300,000 MEMBERS OF THE MILITARY ARMED FORCES.

50% of the governments income is spend on WEAPONS.

MOST OF THOSE WEAPONS HAVE BEEN BOUGHT FROM THE FORMER SOVIET UNION.

THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 300,000 MEMBERS OF THE MILITARY ARMED FORCES.

MOST OF THOSE WEAPONS HAVE BEEN BOUGHT FROM THE FORMER SOVIET UNION.

IF MOST OF THE WEAPONS HAVE BEEN BOUGHT FROM THE FORMER SOVIET UNION THAN DOESN'T IT MAKE SENSE THAT CHEMICAL WEAPONS WERE ON THOSE PURCHASE ORDERS?

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE FORMER SOVIET UNION NEEDS TO RECALL SOME OF THOSE PURCHASE ORDERS.

IF PUTIN REALLY WANTS TO JOIN THE 21ST CENTURY THAN IT WOULD SEEM LIKE A LOGICAL STEP FOR HIM TO TAKE BACK THE CHEMICAL WEAPONS AND SLAP THE SHIT OUT OF ASSAD.

IT'S NOT WEOE'S JOB....IT'S THE LOCAL SHERRI FF IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY WHO ACTUALLY GAVE THE ASSHOLES THOSE WEAPONS IN THE FIRST PLACE.

It's also the job of the countries who continue to support Syria through oil purchases.

GERMANY 32%
ITALY 31%
FRANCE  11%
AUSTRIA 7%
SPAIN 5%

THESE NUMBERS ARE FROM 2010 but from what I've been able to determine the figures are still appropriate......IF YOU HAVE MORE INFO ON CURRENT BOYCOTT OF SYRIAN OIL PLEASE POST IT AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS STORY.

THE CURRENT DILEMMA WHICH FACES OUR PRESIDENT.

DO WE USE MILITARY FORCE TO SHOW SYRIA THAT CHEMICAL WEAPONS CANNOT BE USED.  WHO DO WE USE OUR MILITARY FORCE ON?  DO WE TARGET THE GOVERNMENT HEADQUARTERS?  DO WE BOMB FACTORIES WHERE THEY STORE THE CHEMICAL WEAPONS?

THAT'S PROBABLY NOT A GOOD IDEA

WHERE DO WE BOMB AND WHO DO WE BOMB?

AND ONCE MORE I ASK THE SIMPLE QUESTION.....

Don't  Chemical Weapons make any of Syria's neighbor's nervous?
Nervous enough to do something about it themselves?

BUT INSTEAD OF ANYONE DROPPING BOMBS
I think
the
countries
that
purchase
goods
from
Syria
need
to
stop
issuing
PURCHASE ORDERS.

NOW
