No problem until there's a problem

I've always ( for at least 30 years) used the expression, "There's no problem, until there's a problem."

THE EXPRESSION REALLY FITS WHEN USING IT TO DESCRIBE ENDEAVORS THAT CERTAIN PEOPLE WANT TO UNDERTAKE. ENDEAVORS THAT CERTAIN OTHER PEOPLE THINK SHOULD NOT BE UNDERTAKEN.

EXAMPLES:

THE CONSTRUCTION OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

THE CONSTRUCTION OF OFF SHORE OIL DRILLING RIGS

DUMPING TOXIC SUBSTANCES IN THE OCEAN OR IN THE RIVERS

CLIMBING MT.EVERST

SWIMMING WITH SHARKS

CLOSE UP PHOTOGRAPHY OF GRIZZLY BEARS

WRESTLING WITH ALLIGATORS AND CROCODILES AND EELS.

DECIDING THAT YOUR DOG DOESN'T HAVE TO GO FOR A WALK UNTIL MORNING.

SHOPLIFTING

ELECTING A REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

READING STEPHEN KING NOVELS

FREE CLIMBING HALF-DOME AT YOSEMITE

PRACTICING "SAFE" UNPROTECTED SEX

The first three endeavors on the list obviously can affect the greatest number of people when something goes amiss. And it's amazing how adamant supporters of the first two endeavors can be WHEN attempting to construct one or the other.

There seems to be a total lack of mental acuity when recalling previous problems created.

Nuclear reactor problems are problems that not only can affect millions of people but the problems can last about 250,000 years.

Oil rig disasters and oil tanker spills destroy not only life forms that live in the ocean but entire industries that exist because of those life forms....and if the funds paid out by Exxon for the Alaskan oil spill of 1989 are any indication of "retribution," than the victims of the BP disaster, in the Gulf of Mexico, have nothing to look forward to but years of legal double talk, and then a very small sum of money, after their livelihoods have been totally vaporized.

THERE'S NEVER A PROBLEM UNTIL THERE'S A PROBLEM

Seriously!

Michael Timothy McAlevey
