OIL NIGHTMARE and I'm not talking about the gulf disaster

In Tuesday's LA TIMES there is an article on the front page by Kim Geiger and Tom Hamburger.

Yeah Hamburger.....

The article, entitled Oil's rich history of federal subsidies, should be read by everyone and then everyone should call their congressmen and women and their senators....and anyone else who has influence within the federal government.

The 2005 Energy Policy Act passed during George Bush's second term contained billions of dollars in tax and royalty relief for oil and gas companies that wanted to drill in the Gulf of Mexico and other off shore locations.

There was a $50 million annual earmark designated to support technical research for the gas and oil industry.

THE GOVERNMENT IS PAYING THE PRIVATE OIL AND GAS COMPANIES $50 MILLION
FOR TECHNICAL RESEARCH.

YOU, WHO ARE PAYING $3.45 A GALLON FOR GAS, ARE PAYING $50 MILLION TO OIL COMPANIES SO THAT THEY CAN DO TECHNICAL RESEARCH.

The bill passed with bipartisan support.... including a yes vote by a senator named Barack Obama.

Giving subsidies for drilling and then adding tax breaks is a double Christmas present. The lost revenue from this generosity tallies in the billions of dollars and for some REMARKABLE reason it continues to this very day.

When the current waiver relief program was approved by Congress in 1995, Oil was $18 a barrel.....today it is over $70......and the subsides and tax breaks continue.

THE REASON THEY CONTINUE IS ONE OF THE REAL CRIMES OF THE 21ST CENTURY.

The royalty relief was to only be applied when oil prices were low.

BUT AN ERROR BY THE INTERIOR DEPARTMENT IN THE DRAFTING OF CONTRACTS CREATED A LOOPHOLE FOR THE OIL COMPANIES AND THE SUBSIDIES WERE NOT TIED TO OIL PRICES.

A clerical error or an error of contractual ambiguity???????

SOMEBODY COMMITTED A CRIME.....AND SOMEBODY IS RECEIVING HUGE BENEFITS.

There are 788 gas and oil company lobbyists registered in Washington DC.

788! And they are spending, spending, spending........and then spending some more.

And how that money gets into the politicians pockets is the magic question.

THE FACT IS.....IT DOES!

GIVING OIL COMPANIES TAX RELIEF FOR DRILLING AND SUBSIDES FOR RESEARCH........WHEN WE KNOW HOW MUCH PROFIT THEY MAKE YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT........... IS ONE OF THE GREAT CRIMES OF OUR LIFETIME.

IT MUST STOP AND OUR PRESIDENT DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE SITUATION.

COULD IT BE THAT EACH AND EVERY ELECTED OFFICIAL IS ON THE OIL COMPANIES PAYROLL?

That's they way to do it.......make sure everyone gets a slice and then no one feels left out and therefore no one complains.

TOO SIMPLE AND WAY TOO POSSIBLE!

Of course that's an outlandish concept and way too unabomberish......but something stinks and the smell is coming from just the other side of the Delaware river.

THE AVERAGE AMERICAN NEEDS TO START ASKING CERTAIN QUESTIONS....EVEN IF THOSE QUESTIONS SEEM REALLY ABSTRACT AND IMPOSSIBLE.

WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT GIVE OIL COMPANIES ANY TAX RELIEF OR ANY FORM OF SUBSIDY FOR ANYTHING THEY DO?

WHY?

A SIMPLE QUESTION THAT A POLITICIAN WON'T ANSWER EXCEPT WITH THE FAMOUS DOUBLE TALK JARGON.

I HATE IT WHEN THEY START THAT BULLSHIT!

YOU DON'T KNOW THE FACTS AND THEY DO.... AND THEREFORE YOU CAN'T MAKE THE DECISIONS THEY MAKE.

IT'S REALLY BECOMING A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR BOTH PARTIES

OIL COMPANIES RECEIVING SUBSIDIES AND TAX RELIEF MIGHT BE THE FINAL STRAW.

The problem in the Gulf of Mexico is a major environmental issue.

The problem in Washington is a major morality issue.

Which one is more damaging to the human spirit?

Michael Timothy McAlevey
