Carrolling no more

Trojan football fans had a special treat being able to hear John McKay talk to the press before and after every USC game from 1960 to 1975. I never believed that another coach could rival John's "style."

I was wrong

For the last nine years Trojan fans have been treated to not only a team that wins on a very consistent basis but we have been able to listen to someone who can explain exactly what it taking place both on and off the field. Not quite able to duplicate the McKay humor, Pete Carroll contributed something John didn't have. Pete could throw the ball 55 yards and always seemed like he was ready to play in every game. He seemed like one of the players.

Pete Carroll has been a complete treasure for fans of USC football.

His record speaks for itself but what I will miss the most are his conversations with the press.

His community efforts to eliminate gang problems in Los Angeles are probably more important than anything he does on the field....and Los Angeles will surely miss that energy.

The fans in Seattle are about to experience a true icon in the world of coaching.

I obviously do not want Pete to leave his current job but when Paul Allen calls it's very hard to refuse. He said he would never leave unless he had the perfect situation and since Mr. Allen has more money than anyone in sports and he seems to interfere less than any professional owner....I would call that a perfect situation.

It doesn't matter who becomes the new USC football coach because a transition period is about to take place and things will not be the same for quite awhile in Heritage Hall.

I think it would also be a good time to change Athletic Director. The President, Steve Sample, is retiring, Pete is becoming a Seahawk and Mike Garrett should follow them out the door. His non-communication regarding matters concerning the athletic program at USC are glaring.

Since we have to start all over we might as well cover all the bases.

I don't want Pete to leave but it appears to be irreversible.

I just want to thank him for all the energy and work he has put in to the program and into the community.

It was a special gift and I'll never forget it.

Thanks Pete!

Michael Timothy McAlevey
