A contest was recently formed to find the "highest-level atheist, agnostic or humanist or any other kind of non-theist, currently holding an elected office in the United States."
The grand prize was $1000.00 and the group conducting the contest, was called the Secular Coalition for America.
A Democratic Congressman from California won the contest. The group that nominated him got the $1000.00 and that group was called American Atheists of California.
The Congressman's name is Pete Stark, who turns out to be a member of the Unitarian Church. Mr. Stark has been a Congressman since 1973. Congressman Stark chairs the health subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee.
There was a poll conducted last month by Gallup/USA Today that revealed the following information.
PEOPLE WHO WOULD VOTE FOR A WELL-QUALIFIED PERSON, WHO IS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
1) AN ATHEIST........45%
2) A CATHOLIC........95%
3) A JEW..................92%
4) A MORMON.........72%
5) A DWARF.............7%
6) A RELATIVE.......14%
7) ARIEL FROM THE LITTLE MERMAID.......23%
8) SHREK................96%
37 PERCENT of the people polled said that the guy who plays Shrek was their favorite actor.
How about Pete Stark and Shrek getting together and forming some type of event....Congressman Stark could say that he believed Shrek could be the new Messiah....and there's a certain percentage of people who would respond with...."you know...I thought the same thing."
OK.... SO ONLY THE FIRST FOUR RESULTS FROM THE USA/GALLUP POLL ARE REAL.
(hopefully)
Polls and belief systems......
The beauty about one person believing anything....is that it really has no bearing on whether or not it might be true.
Just as those crazy loons who say they know God's will.....and God knows there are a bunch of them....and the ones who say God doesn't exist....have no affect on reality.
The fact of the matter is....those who stand behind religious doctrine, no matter what doctrine or what religion, seem to be causing a lot more trouble in the world than those who claim not to believe in God or simply state...."we don't know."
I'm not really sure where the Chinese fit into this mix because they don't appear to be causing a lot of problems at the moment. But because Communism is a Secular political movement and since that didn't really work for Russia, I look for China to learn some valuable lessons. I hate to sound ignorant but I'm not really sure what China is......statistics show that 59% of the population is non-religious which leaves 41% believing in something...and 41% of the population works out to around.....700 million people who aren't buying the traditional Communist malarkey.
China seems to be popping up alot in my blogs......must have something to do with numbers and balance and planetary influence and so on and so on........
The article about Pete Stark and the contest also states that Kurt Vonnegut is a secular humanist.
I guess that was common knowledge...but has anyone asked Kurt lately what he thinks? An interesting interview would be Geraldo and Kurt....since one of Geraldo's ex-wives is one of Kurt's daughters.
And I don't know why this is funny but......
The name of the guy who collided head on with James Dean.....was
DONALD TURNUPSEED.....
but not as funny or weird if he had just had one more p added to his name.
It will be interesting to watch the reaction to the Pete Stark story. There are people I personally know who now think Pete Stark is their favorite politician. And there are lots of other people I know who think Pete Stark is stark raving mad.....and then of course there is an entire other group of people I know who couldn't give a flying f..k what Pete Stark believes.....one way or the another......
.....but most of the people I know....don't know that 41% of the Chinese believe in some form of higher intelligence.....even if that higher intelligence might be a very large jade statue.
Donald Turnupseed killed James Dean......
I didn't know that.....but I think there's a song in there somewhere.
On October first of 55
Turnupseed was still alive
yesterday he drove his truck through an American dream
literally flattened a young speedster named Mr. Dean
felt real bad about what he'd done
just finished work and was looking for fun
pulled out on a road just like every other day
but this time a German car got in his way
the beer he just popped tasted real good
he wasn't traveling faster than he should
he had no idea what was coming his way
a marriage of immortality forever and a day
the tears poured forth from every part of the land
but nobody ever though about the Turnupseed man
he wasn't charged with any kind of crime
except for being in the wrong place at the right time
legends are made for many different reasons
and Ecclesiastes says it best about the seasons
so we don't need to dwell upon who had to bleed
we just should think sometimes about poor Mr. Turnupseed
and by the way......God Bless you Mr. Stark
