Afternoon….if you will refer to my “SO MUCH TO DO” article from this morning, you will then understand why this story not only caught my eye, but made my blood boil just enough to cook an internal egg of contempt.
(The second item on my list…..STRESS WIDER USE OF SOLAR PANELS.)
I read the LA TIMES and the left side story, on the front page, has this headline.
He’s still following the sun.
Gary Gerber has pushed solar power for 30 years.
Now that it’s no longer the domain of hippies, he’s
really plugging in.

My first thought is….that’s a nice coincidence. As I was reading the story, about this man’s struggle to develop a solar power company named Sun Light & Power, I came across the following short paragraph.
Federal and state tax credits eventually boosted business—and in 1979, President Carter mounted 34 solar collectors on the White House roof to power the West Wing’s water heater. In 1980 Gerber sold his cheese business to go full time on solar.
But then President Reagan moved in and the White House solar collectors…came down. The tax credits disappeared in the mid 80’s and the industry “plunged” over a cliff,” Gerber recalled.
In 1979 the White House had 34 solar panels! And then they were removed by the next tenant…THE GREAT RONALD REAGAN.
Excuse me…but is this the same Reagan that made so many fiscal cuts in Health care, during the 1980’s, that facilities had to close…resulting in a homeless problem that continues to escalate out of control….to this very day.
I realize that general sentiment does not allow one to denigrate the great emancipator but seriously…..34 SOLAR PANELS INSTALLED AT THE WHITE HOUSE and he takes them down! I wonder if his Vice-President Bush, and buddy Dick Cheney toasted with champagne as those nasty non-oil driven energy devices were ripped out and thrown to the dogs of solar hell. I bet it was a great party! All that oil, nuclear and coal laughter… taking place as those beautiful panels where tossed overboard….and a little extra hooting about that flaky Jimmy Carter and his strange ideas for the future of America, and the future of the planet. I can hear Cheney as he’s starting his new job at Halliburton, “The nerve of that peanut farmer trying to show the country that alternative energy sources have a future.”
27 years ago there were 34 SOLAR PANELS ON THE WHITE HOUSE! That fact just blows my mind and I’m sure it’s a fact that 99% of the American people don’t know about….but the sad number is…..70% of the American people probably don’t care.
I wonder what the percentage is for people who don’t know what a solar panel is…???? The number might scare the crap out of me….
Thanks Jimmy for at least trying….and since Ronnie’s gone I can’t really thank him, and if I think about it, honestly….I can’t think of anything that I would thank him for….except that one thing that he brought to the game….a good personality. He should have been an actor….or a spokesperson for some type of cleaning product.
